Alpha Omega Joins DC Panel on Oral Health Needs of Holocaust Survivors

Posted on Wednesday, May 3, 2017

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) recently joined members of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (AO) in Washington, DC, on April 25—Holocaust Remembrance Day—for a panel discussion designed to educate Capitol Hill legislative staff about the oral health needs of Holocaust survivors living in poverty, as well as the successes of the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program.

More than 30 AO dentists from across the U.S. who volunteer for the program also attended the event and met with their local legislators to discuss its impact. The program, which was launched in November 2014 in response to the White House's call to action to help Holocaust survivors age with dignity and respect, has provided free dental care to more than 600 Holocaust survivors across North America.

Rep. Thomas Suozzi of New York delivered remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day and lauded the program, saying it "serves as a model for what we can accomplish when we work together to help those in need." Rep. Suozzi's remarks in their entirety were entered into the Congressional Record and can be found here.

Care recipients are identified by the network of Jewish Family and Children's Service agencies or other identified partner organizations, as well as people of any faith who were victims of Nazi persecution and meet the program's other eligibility requirements. In addition to financial need, patient participation is prioritized by three critical factors: the elimination of pain, restoration of function, and lack of dental coverage. Participating clinicians determine each patient's scope of care.

The program fills a critical need for many of the 100,000 Holocaust survivors living in the U.S., one third of whom live in poverty. Survivors often have special oral health needs, as many suffered from prolonged nutritional deprivation and had little to no dental care access as children during World War II. Participating AO chapters include those in Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Detroit; Los Angeles; New York City; the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area; Philadelphia; Phoenix; San Francisco; Seattle; the greater Washington, DC, area; and West Hartford, Connecticut in the U.S., and Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg in Canada.

"The Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program demonstrates the impact that innovative partnerships can have on the oral health, overall health, and quality of life of this most deserving population," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc. "In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, we gathered to educate our nation's leadership, and ask for their support in propelling action to ensure that Holocaust survivors live their lives in comfort and dignity."

American Dental Association Releases Resources on Genetics and Oral Health

Posted on Wednesday, May 3, 2017

CHICAGO – The American Dental Association (ADA) announced new resources for dental professionals and the public related to genetics and oral health.

According to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs’ Genetic Testing Workgroup, the ADA body that authored the genetic and genetic testing resource, “While genetic testing holds potential for clinical application in the future, clinical measurements remain the best approach to assessment of caries and periodontal disease at this time.” Clinical measurements include probing measurements and radiographic (x-ray) evaluations.

A predictive test for dental caries (the disease that causes cavities) or for periodontal (gum) disease does not currently exist; both of these are complex diseases with multiple gene and environmental risk factors.  No gene to date has been identified that has as large an impact on periodontal disease as do environmental influences, such as smoking or diabetes, according to the resource.

There are commercially marketed tests that claim to measure risk of disease or susceptibility to future disease. These tests are either in the category of laboratory-developed tests or direct-to-consumer (DTC) tests. The Food and Drug Administration recently issued a press release on direct-to consumer genetic health risk (GHR) tests stating, “It is important that people understand that genetic risk is just one piece of the bigger puzzle, it does not mean they will or won’t ultimately develop a disease.” The FDA is establishing criteria, called special controls, which clarify the agency’s expectations in assuring the tests’ accuracy, reliability and clinical relevance. These special controls, when met along with general controls, provide reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for these and similar GHR tests.

The ADA’s resource on genetics and genetic testing explains basic genetic principles, genetic testing and using genetic information in decision-making in dentistry. The summary is available on the ADA’s Oral Health Topics webpage for dental professionals and information for the public on this topic is available on MouthHealthy.org

Premier® Dental Products Company Introduces BioCoat™

Posted on Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Premier® Dental Products Company introduces BioCoat™, a bioactive resin pit and fissure sealant with patented SmartCap™ Technology.  BioCoat combines optimal physical properties with extended release of fluoride and remineralization ions for relentless protection.

BioCoat, a heavily filled resin sealant offers outstanding compressive and shear bond strengths, low polymerization shrinkage to protect against marginal gaps, and is thixotropic.  BioCoat flows freely into the tightest pits and fissures for excellent adaptation and adhesion to the enamel.  It is easily light cured and offers an esthetic appearance, while continuously releasing fluoride.

SmartCap Technology, developed in partnership with Creighton University, incorporates patented semi-permeable resin microcapsules.  In BioCoat, the rechargeable SmartCap microcapsules are filled with ionic solutions of fluoride, calcium and phosphate, which diffuse in and out of the sealant. The ions supersaturate the oral environment around the enamel, which provides defense against demineralization during acid attacks.  The extended release of remineralization ions provides long-term protection while strengthening enamel and sealing margins against microleakage.   There is no degradation of the restoration resulting from the fluoride release

Introductory offer 1+1. Each BioCoat standard package contains an additional 1.2ml syringe at no charge so that dentists and hygienists can evaluate BioCoat and maximize protection for their patients.
