Study Links Shorter Sleep and Sugar-Sweetened Drink Consumption

People who sleep five or fewer hours a night are likely to also drink significantly more sugary caffeinated drinks, such as sodas and energy drinks, according to a new study of more than 18,000 adults led by UC San Francisco scientists.

The authors emphasize that it’s not yet clear whether drinking sugar-sweetened beverages causes people to sleep less, or whether sleep deprivation makes people seek out more sugar and caffeine to stay awake, though previous research suggests both could be true.

“We think there may be a positive feedback loop where sugary drinks and sleep loss reinforce one another, making it harder for people to eliminate their unhealthy sugar habit,” said lead author Aric A. Prather, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at UCSF. “This data suggests that improving people’s sleep could potentially help them break out of the cycle and cut down on their sugar intake, which we know to be linked to metabolic disease.”

The study – published online on Nov. 9, 2016 – will be included in the December 2016 issue of Sleep Health.

A growing body of research has linked sugary beverage consumption to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood sugar and excess body fat, which can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Lack of sleep is also associated with a higher risk for metabolic disease. Recently, several studies have linked the two factors in school-age children, showing that children who get less sleep are more likely to drink soda and other sugary beverages during the day, said Prather, who is also associate director of the UCSF Center for Health and Community.

To understand whether this is a more general pattern in the adult population, Prather and his team analyzed the 2005-2012 records of 18,779 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES), an ongoing study of dietary habits and health status in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults administered by the National Center for Health Statistics. The study includes participants’ reports of how much sleep they usually got during the work week, as well as their total consumption of various beverages, including caffeinated and non-caffeinated sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juice, drinks with artificial sweeteners, and plain coffee, tea and water.

After controlling for a host of sociodemographic factors and health variables that could potentially impact sugary beverage consumption and sleep, the researchers found that people who regularly slept five or fewer hours per night also drank 21 percent more caffeinated sugar-sweetened beverages – including both sodas and non-carbonated energy drinks – than those who slept seven to eight hours a night. People who slept six hours per night regularly consumed 11 percent more caffeinated sugar-sweetened beverages. On the other hand, the team found no association between sleep duration and consumption of juice, tea or diet drinks.

Prather noted that previous research has strongly indicated that sleep deprivation increases hunger, particularly hunger for sugary and fatty foods.

“Short sleepers may seek out caffeinated sugar-sweetened beverages to increase alertness and stave off daytime sleepiness,” he said. “However, it’s not clear whether drinking such beverages affects sleep patterns, or if people who don’t sleep much are more driven to consume them. Unfortunately, the data in the current study do not allow us to draw any conclusions about cause and effect.”

Additionally, said Prather, sleep duration figures in the study were based on self-reporting, which might not accurately reflect the participants’ true sleep patterns. “It will be important to have additional studies with more objective measures of sleep such as EEG recordings or wearable sleep monitors,” he said. “We also need long-term prospective studies to better understand how sleep and sugary beverage consumption affect one another over time.”  

Whatever the relationship between sugar and sleep, said Prather, the study may point to a new way to address the problem of excess sugar consumption.

“Sleeping too little and drinking too many sugary drinks have both been linked to negative metabolic health outcomes, including obesity,” said Prather. “Given the likely two-way relationship between sugary drinks and short sleep, enhancing the duration and quality of sleep could be a useful new intervention for improving the health and well-being of people who drink a lot of sugary beverages.”

Adler, PhD, of UCSF; Barbara Laraia, PhD, MPH, of UCSF and UC Berkeley; Lorrene Ritchie, PhD, of the UC Nutrition Policy Institute; and senior investigator Elissa S. Epel, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and director of the Aging, Metabolism, and Emotion Center and the Center for Obesity Assessment, Study, & Treatment (COAST) at UCSF..

The study was supported by funds from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Oral Health America: Changing the Way School-Based Oral Health Services are Delivered

CHICAGO, November 10 – Oral Health America (OHA) is pleased to announce that they have selected three Smiles Across America® (SAA) Program Partners to participate in an innovative endeavor that changes the way school-based oral health services are planned and delivered in their communities. Thanks in part to a $60,000 grant from Crest + Oral-B, OHA kicked off the project with a two-day event at the Oyler School’s Robert & Adele Schiff Early Learning Center in Cincinnati from October 31 to November 1, 2016. This marks Procter & Gamble’s continued support for the project launched at OHA’s 2015 Share and Learn Conference, co-hosted with Crest + Oral-B.

Human Centered Design (HCD), a concept that grew up among corporations seeking to place the customer at the center of the product or service design process, has been gaining keen interest in the non-profit community over the past two years. According to Beth Truett, OHA's President and CEO, “Oral Health America believes this is the first project among oral health non-profit organizations to apply Human Centered Design, which approaches decision-making about changes in school-based oral health services with the children and the community at the center of the process.”

Programs selected for the HCD project span the scope of OHA’s 304 Smiles Across America program partners, representing diverse rural, small town and urban communities in which 50% or more children received free or reduced lunches in the schools. The programs offer services via clinics, portable and mobile equipment and focus on communities in which poverty, language differences and transportation are factors of significant impact. Participating programs include: Santa Barbara-Ventura Counties Dental Care Foundation (CA), Children’s Dental Services (MN) and Comprehensive Community Action, Inc./Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (RI).

Each participating program will present a progress report at OHA’s 2017 Share & Learn Partner Conference, with the intent of helping other SAA partners better understand the process of Human Centered Design, how it can assist with identifying the issues faced by communities, and what the opportunities are for improving oral health services provided in school-based and school-linked settings.

Free All-on-4 Online Course Now Available

For those looking to learn more about the evidence-based All-on-4® treatment concept,1-4 Nobel Biocare’s new free online course offers a way to build knowledge that is essential for a successful start with this proven protocol.

The training has been developed for any clinicians looking to increase their understanding of this established concept. Foundation Announces Spear Grant Winners

The Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology announced the winners of the first-ever 2016 Spear Education Grant: Anthony Calonico, CDT, TE (Bolingbrook, Illinois); Daniel Ulaszek, CDT (Bolingbrook, Illinois); Naoki Aiba, CDT (Monterey, California); Paul McGrath, CDT (Bolingbrook, Illinois); and Remington Redell, CDT (Aurora, Colorado).

Spear Education, along with the Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology, created this grant in order to support the Foundation’s purpose by making higher-level education more accessible. The winners will have tuition fees for a Spear Seminar course covered as part of this grant. The cost for such a course would typically be $1,695 per seat.

“The Foundation was able to offer more grants and scholarships this year than ever before, and Spear Education is one of the many to thank for that," Foundation Chair Jeff Stronk says. NuSmile Acquires Avalon Biomed

NuSmile Ltd. today announced its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Avalon Biomed Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) products.

Avalon Biomed Inc. was founded in 2011 by Carolyn Primus, PhD, who holds both Masters and Doctorate degrees in Materials Science & Engineering. Dr. Primus has 10 patents in dentistry, including three for MTA-based products, to her credit, and has co-authored over 20 papers on bioactive dental cements. Avalon Biomed’s two key commercial products are NeoMTA Plus® and Grey MTA Plus®.

NeoMTA Plus and Grey MTA Plus are award-winning, bioceramic, tricalcium silicate-based bioactive cements that trigger hydroxyapatite formation and dentinal bridging to promote the healing process. These products have broad indications for pulpal and periapical tissue contact including root-end filling to resorption, sealer to perforation repair, pulp-capping to base/liner, and pulpotomies to apexification.
