Melville, N.Y.,  October 7, 2015 - Henry Schein, Inc., the world’s largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, today kicked off its 8th annual Business of Dentistry Conference at Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida. 5 Ways to Protect Your Braces, Aligners During Halloween

ST. LOUIS, MO--(Marketwired - October 06, 2015) - For most children, October means one thing: Halloween candy. For orthodontists, it's a month for embracing a beautiful, healthy smile in honor of National Orthodontic Health Month.

After all, we all know that Halloween treats tend to play tricks on patients.

That's why the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) offers these five timely tips to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic "appliances" while protecting teeth from decay.

  1. Avoid sticky situations with your braces and aligners. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind), jelly beans and soft drinks.

  2. Say "boo" to hard treats - including hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially unpopped kernels). Whether in orthodontic treatment or not, no one should ever chew ice.

  3. Brush up! Sweets can cause cavities, which means brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season. Orthodontic patients should be especially vigilant about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

  4. Spooktacular news: Not all Halloween candy is off-limits. Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. The AAO even offers orthodontic-friendly recipes for Halloween on its website at http://www.mylifemysmile.org/recipes.

  5. Make a commitment to oral health. Deciding to avoid hard and chewy sweetsbefore the Halloween season increases your rate of success -- and reduces the likelihood that you'll break braces.

October is National Orthodontist Month

Cleanings, fillings and crowns are one thing, but when it comes to moving teeth into the perfect position for both health and aesthetics, choosing the right practitioner can be a bit confusing. An office sign that says "orthodontics" does not necessarily mean the dentist is a specialist.  There are simple steps that any consumer can take to make sure they choose the right practitioner for their needs.

  • First, ask the dentist if they are an orthodontist or a general dentist who performs orthodontic treatment.

Pumerantz Lecture to Focus on Virtual Reality

Pomona, California (PRWEB) October 06, 2015 - W. Paul Brown, DDS, FICD, FACD, a pioneer in virtual reality, will serve as the keynote speaker for the seventh annual Dr. Philip Pumerantz Distinguished Lectureship Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Western University of Health Sciences.

His topic will be “The Impact of Virtual Reality on Health Science Education.” The lectureship will begin at 7 p.m. in WesternU’s Health Education Center Lecture Hall I, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.

Brown is Consulting Associate Professor in the Division of Clinical Anatomy, Stanford School of Medicine. He practiced endodontics in Palo Alto, California for many years and was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and Clinical Assistant Professor at the UC San Francisco School of Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

He is currently a digital imaging researcher and, until recently, was the co-director for two Stanford University undergraduate courses: Biomedical Visualization and Procedural Based Head & Neck Anatomy. He was also director of a summer intern program at Stanford University for exceptional high school and college students.

Brown developed systems that made possible the Anatomage Virtual Dissection Table, which is the centerpiece of WesternU’s J and K Virtual Reality Learning Center.

“The advances in imaging and imaging reconstructions (virtual reality) are progressing at a remarkable rate,” Brown said. “We now have the ability to access and make treatment decisions from anatomical information that was previously inaccessible. In addition, anything that we can visualize, we can measure. So we have the ability to digitally analyze and record patient data and therefore improve their medical care.”

Brown has been the Principal Investigator on 11 NIH grants involved with medical imaging, virtual reality and medical/dental surgical simulations and the development of curriculum authoring platforms. He has published three electronic atlases of anatomy used around the globe: “A Dental Anatomy and 3D Interactive Tooth Atlas,” “Electronic Atlas of Human Occlusion & the TMJ,” and “3-D Interactive Atlas of Skull Osteology.” He lectures extensively internationally on the use of anatomical virtual reality models for research and education.

Brown was the dentist for the San Francisco Zoo for 20 years and was co-director of the endodontic part of the general dental residency program at the Palo Alto VA hospital for 10 years.

Drs. Daljit and Elaine Sarkaria of Orange established the lectureship in 2009 in honor of WesternU’s founder and president emeritus, Dr. Philip Pumerantz, as part of a $5.1 million pledge to WesternU. Age One Dental Visit is Vital
