Scheduling Institute sends dentists and baseball caps to the Dominican Republic

Posted on Thursday, May 11, 2017

MAY 9 2017 – Alpharetta, GA – Smiles are a little bit brighter in the Dominican Republic these days. Thanks to World Mission Partners (WMP) and financial encouragement from Jay Geier and the Scheduling Institute, dental teams from across the country are planning trips to serve people in the poorest neighborhoods through a mobile dental clinic.

As part of their outreach to underserved communities, WMP discovered a great opportunity to partner with Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The hospital currently houses only one dental chair and provides a mobile unit with two chairs to see patients in local Bateyes - sugar cane field worker communities. After his first visit to the hospital, Geier committed to funding the construction of an additional wing specifically for a six chair practice with one oral surgical operatory. In addition to Geier’s support, Scheduling Institute client and President of Design Ergonomics, Dr. David Ahearn has committed to design the space and donate the necessary equipment for it.

A successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and popular speaker, Geier is best known as the president and founder of the Scheduling Institute, the largest dental practice management consulting company in the world.

The Scheduling Institute has more than 2,100 dental practice clients, so it made sense for Geier to get them on board. Three years ago, he incorporated mission trips into his company’s culture. He now challenges his top level clients – 5X members – to take their teams to the Dominican Republic and donate their time and expertise to the many people in need.

At two recent Scheduling Institute 5x leadership seminars, Geier offered up $1,000 and $2,000 scholarships for interested clients and their teams to give them a kick start to their fundraising and increase their chances of going. “I know this will be life changing for the doctor and his team. They come back from these trips completely changed,” he said. “Sometimes all they need is a head start.” 38 teams took advantage of the scholarships, committing to serve in The Dominican Republic or Costa Rica in 2017 and 2018.

In 2014, Geier teamed up with Costa Rica Mission Partners, a 501c3 organization founded by Ed and Patti Pease, that led dental teams to one of the poorest communities in Central America to serve its people.  Following 16 trips to Costa Rica in 2016, the Costa Rican government created significant road blocks for the doctors, so Geier and Pease set out to find another option. “You know the saying that when God closes one door, another one opens. That’s just what happened here,” said Patti. The Dominican Republic was identified as a good place, so CRMP evolved to World Mission Partners (www.worldmissionpartners.org).

In just the first two months since expansion to the Dominican Republic, there have been five teams who have served 542 patients in 20 days. The impact of their service spreads beyond those patients.

“When you do generous things, people are so touched and appreciative that it becomes positively addictive,” Geier said. “This is a great opportunity for my clients and team to get on board, give, and really see the good their time and money is doing. There is such a tremendous need.”

Geier promotes a generous culture at his office, so it is no surprise that Scheduling Institute employees began a hat drive to further support the efforts of their clients and protect the people in the Dominican Republic from excessive sun exposure. The goal was to get 500 hats in three weeks. Team members put a call out on social media and 661 hats came in to Alpharetta, Georgia from all over the country including New York, North Carolina and Ohio.  “It’s confirmation that people want to help, they want to make an impact on others in whatever way possible – and it doesn’t always have to be financially,” said Andrea Lansford, a Scheduling Institute team leader and organizer of the drive.

Enrollment and Preliminary Data from EFFECTS Study

Posted on Thursday, May 11, 2017

Pleasanton, CA, April 26, 2017– ProSomnus® Sleep Technologies, the leader in precision oral appliance manufacturing for obstructive sleep apnea, has announced the beginning of the EFFECTS study. It is estimated that up to 20% of the population has OSA and only 10-15% have been identified and diagnosed. According to the RAND study, the comorbidities, accidents and other deleterious sequelae to OSA and poor sleep are estimated to cost the US economy upwards of 411 Billion Dollars or 2.28% of the GDP. One problem with treatment is, many patients abandon CPAP, or avoid this alternative completely. Oral appliances are an emerging therapy that offer a better patient experience and therapeutic outcomes. This study is designed to confirm this.

Patients with apnea hypopnea index of 5-50 will be treated with the MicrO2. The patient’s compliance will be monitored using the DentiTrac® Compliance Chip (Braebon Medical Corporation) and total sleep time will be tracked with the Beddit Sleep Tracker. This will create data for the SARAH Index (Sleep Adjusted Residual Apnea Hypopnea Index) to be calculated as a measure of effectiveness. This new important metric will demonstrate the impact on treatment outcome as it relates to compliance and the critical role oral appliance therapy has on long term treatment. The principal investigator, Dr. Jordan Stern, MD of BlueSleep.

“Sleep apnea is the disease of the century, and the current medical establishment is not properly addressing this epidemic,” stated Jordan Stern, MD, Founder and CEO of Blue Sleep. “Fitness trackers, and sleep sensors are raising awareness about sleep health and I am pleased to be using these new technologies along with the ProSomnus MicrO2 Device to bring sleep health to the digital age. Easier diagnosis and better treatment options with the ProSomnus oral appliances will help improve the lives of the tens of millions of Americans suffering from sleep apnea and associated chronic diseases - it’s about time.”

“Telemedicine, next generation Oral Appliances, and consumer electronics have the potential to expand access to effective, comfortable and efficient Obstructive Sleep Apnea Therapy. The aim of the EFFECTS study is to scientifically validate this premise," commented Len Liptak, CEO of ProSomnus Sleep Technologies. "ProSomnus is honored to partner with Blue Sleep, Dr. Stern and Beddit on this important study."

“ProSomnus is committed to evidenced based claims to support our products and the processes enabled by our customers that advance the health of patients,” added David Kuhns, PhD, VP of Technology at ProSomnus. “Through controlled studies like this, ProSomnus supports the evolution of OSA treatment using OAT through excellence in appliance design and treatment protocols.”

New PainFREE GEL Desensitizer

Posted on Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Now, with just one thirty second treatment even your most sensitive patients can get immediate relief from painful cold stimuli. With a thick gel consistency that won’t run off the tooth, PainFREE GEL provides more precise, pinpoint placement of the medication, providing desensitizing results exactly where you need them.

PainFREE GEL doesn’t require acid-etching the dentin or anesthetizing the patient, which can lower their pain threshold and make the pain worse. It seals the tooth’s open dentinal tubules with a unique tri-polymer formulation penetrating deep down the sidewalls and grafting the molecules tightly to the calcium in the hydroxyapatite.  This network of polymer chains creates a durable barrier to the movement of fluid, a known cause of tooth hypersensitivity.

Vigilant Biosciences Announces Commencement of FDA Studies for OncAlert® Cancer Test

Posted on Wednesday, May 10, 2017

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Vigilant Biosciences, Inc., a leading innovator and developer of solutions that aid in the early detection and intervention of oral/oropharyngeal cancer, today announced the launch and first patient enrollment for clinical studies of its OncAlert® point-of-care qualitative assay in support of its registration submission to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Vigilant Biosciences' initial FDA clinical study is designed to validate performance and evaluate implementation of the OncAlert RAPID point-of-care qualitative assay into the standard of care paradigm for patients presenting with increased clinical risk for oral/oropharyngeal cancer. The study will enroll up to 1,000 patients with sites located in the United States as well as internationally.

Part of the funding support Vigilant Biosciences will receive for the study will come from Renaissance Health Service Corporation, the parent organization for an extensive family of affiliated companies specializing in dental insurance and administration, technology, claims clearinghouse, and dental practice management services.

"We are very pleased to begin FDA studies to bring our groundbreaking OncAlert technology to the U.S.," said Matthew H.J. Kim, Vigilant Biosciences Founder and Chief Executive Officer. "Oral cancer is a growing global issue, and we are seeing a great need for our solutions around the world. We are very encouraged by the success of the product to date, and look forward to continuing to deliver breakthrough solutions to aid clinicians in the early detection and intervention of oral cancer."

"Our commencement of patient enrollment in our FDA study is an important milestone in bringing our OncAlert technology to the U.S.," said Michael J. Donovan, Ph.D., M.D. Chief Clinical Officer of Vigilant Biosciences. "We believe that the OncAlert technology will enhance our capability to detect oral and oropharyngeal cancer earlier than current standard of care approaches. We look forward to these initial clinical study results and moving towards FDA clearance of the test."

The Vigilant Biosciences OncAlert Oral Cancer product line is based on patented technology that measures soluble CD44, a tumor-initiating and stem cell-associated biomarker, and total protein levels – markers clinically validated to be associated specifically with oral cancer – to aid clinicians in the early detection and intervention of oral cancer. The simple, oral rinse procedure is easy to administer and non-invasive for the patient. The OncAlert Oral Cancer product line, includes the OncAlert Oral Cancer RAPID Test and the OncAlert Oral Cancer LAB Test, both CE Marked and available in select markets outside the United States. Vigilant Biosciences' accurate, cost-effective tests can benefit every adult, with particular emphasis on high-risk populations (i.e., current and former tobacco users, those who consume excessive alcohol, and people with human papillomavirus).

About Oral Cancer

According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 529,000 new cases of oral (lip, oral cavity and pharynx) cancer each year worldwide, with mortality rates that reach up to 292,000 deaths each year. In the United States, more than 49,750 individuals will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year – around 132 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed each day. More than 9,750 people will die in the U.S. this year, as a result of the disease. Historically, the death rate associated with oral cancer is particularly high due to late stage diagnosis and intervention.

Currently, the vast majority of patients are detected through a visual and physical exam when symptomatic and are likely late stage.  As a result, oral cancer often goes undetected to the point of metastasizing. More than 40 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancer die within five years, due to late stage diagnosis. In contrast, early detection (stage I and II) of oral cancer yields survival rates of up to 90 percent. For those who survive oral cancer diagnosed in the later stages, the treatment is painful, debilitating and often disfiguring. In addition, patients often struggle with eating and drinking, communicating and self-image.
