CHICAGO, September 19 – Aspiring pre-dental student Hannah Wilson concludes her journey across the country as the first participant in Oral Health America’s (OHA) new peer-to-peer fundraising initiative, Smile4Health. The new effort engages individuals with opportunities to raise awareness and much needed funds in support of programmatic work. Wilson rode her bike across the country to participate in a sport that she loves and to spread the word about oral health.

"This trip combined my passion for helping people,” said Hannah Wilson. "I got the opportunity to raise awareness and fundraise for oral health along the route as well!“

The North Carolina native traveled 4,228 miles of the historic TransAmerica Bicycle Trail from Virginia to Oregon earlier this summer. Wilson raised over $3,600 to support OHA programs and hosted two events to giveaway health resources along with toothbrushes and toothpaste. Hannah chronicled her journey across nine states on a blog, smilesformilesweb.com

Established in 1955, OHA supports the efforts of “Bringing Healthy Mouths to Life” through its range of partnerships and program efforts across the country.

OSAP Foundation Receives Major Grant

Posted on Thursday, September 15, 2016

September 15, 2016 (ATLANTA, GA) — The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) Foundation has announced that it has been awarded a $95,000 grant from the Dental Assistants Foundation (DAF). The funding will be used in the areas of research, scholarship, and education for dental assistants in recognition of the critical role trained and motivated dental assistants play in ensuring the safety of the dental care environment for patients and providers of dental services.

The grant was given as a charitable contribution as part of the DAF dissolution plan. In awarding the grant, Ellen Landis, Chairman of DAF, said “The DAF recognizes the mission and goals of the OSAP Foundation to be in alignment with the DAF’s mission and goals as it applies to the education of dental assistants.” The grant was given in memory of Anna Nelson, CDA, RDA, MA, a leader in dental assisting and infection control who passionately advocated to advance dental assistants’ understanding of, and compliance with, the guidelines, regulations, and best practices to prevent disease transmission in dental settings.

The OSAP Foundation will use the DAF grant to fund a comprehensive safety education, scholarship, and research program geared toward dental assistants. The goal will be to underscore the importance of dental assistants, particularly in regard to the vital part they contribute to infection control. Specifically, the program will support dental assistants who serve—or want to serve—as the infection control coordinator in their practice setting.

“The OSAP Foundation is particularly excited to announce this grant during Dental Infection Control Awareness Month,” says Executive Director Therese Long. “OSAP is focusing on the Infection Control Coordinator this month and is offering multiple free resources to support this important member of the dental team. We are anxious to further advance these efforts through this new grant and by leveraging our partnerships and resources.”

“The fact that DAF has demonstrated its confidence in the OSAP Foundation’s capabilities by awarding this generous grant,” says Long, “is a testament to our commitment to advancing the cause of infection prevention in dentistry. We will continue to develop and implement initiatives to help ensure the safe and infection-free delivery of oral healthcare.” For more information on Dental Infection Control Awareness Month, go to: https://www.osap.org/page/DICAM2016

AACD Scientific Session in Las Vegas: Show-Stopping Cosmetic Dentistry Education for the Whole Team

Posted on Thursday, September 15, 2016

MADISON, Wis. (9/15/16) — Did you know the very first AACD Annual Scientific Session was held in Las Vegas at the MGM Hotel in 1984? Now, 33 years later, AACD returns to Las Vegas with a winning approach to comprehensive cosmetic dentistry education. The 33rd Annual AACD Scientific Session will take place April 18-21, 2017, at the Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino.

The AACD 2017 program will feature three unique groups of educators: the Legends, the Illusionists, and the High Rollers, who will impart their wisdom, reveal their techniques, and share their expertise.

On the first day of the conference, attendees will gain confidence learning from The Legends, practitioners who’ve made a name for themselves in the industry, including: William G. Dickerson, DDS; David S. Hornbrook, DDS, FAACD; Larry Rosenthal, DDS, AAACD; William C. Strupp, Jr., DDS, FAACD.

The second day of AACD 2017 will have attendees learning how to achieve highly aesthetic results from the Illusionists, professionals that excel at creating the illusion of Mother Nature. This group of educators features: Howard M. Chasolen, DMD; Harald Heindl, MDT; Bill Marais, RDT; Edward McLaren, DDS; Steve M. Phelan, DDS, AAACD; Kyle Stanley, DDS; Dennis J. Wells, DDS, AAACD.

The third day, conference goers will learn how to achieve predictable results from the High Rollers, colleagues who went all in on technology and won big including: Scott Ganz, DMD; Will Gianni, DDS; Sonia Leziy, DDS; Brahm Miller, DDS; Sadao Sato, DDS, PhD.

A staple AACD offering, Accreditation track courses are available for those interested in starting their journey to achieving clinical excellence and professional distinction. Attendees can officially begin the process of AACD Accreditation by taking the written exam in Las Vegas and can learn more about the Accreditation process by attending the Accreditation and Criteria workshops.

But AACD 2017 has even more educational offerings. Grace Sun, DDS, FAACD, and Chair of the AACD Professional Education Committee explains, “Bringing the AACD Annual Scientific Session back to the entertainment capital of the world is an opportunity for the AACD to truly establish its annual scientific session as the comprehensive cosmetic dentistry education capital of the world.”

To that end, the educational offerings have been greatly expanded: the AACD has partnered with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) to offer a lecture and a hands-on workshop on implants; the AACD has once again partnered with the Academy of Laser Dentistry to provide a laser dentistry competency course; the lab technician track has been extended to two days of first-rate education; and the dental team track has been expanded to include courses for the team every day of the conference.

All of this education will be taking place in the world-class Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino. Host for AACD 2017, The Venetian has been named one of Forbes Travel Guide’s Four-Star hotels for the 13th year in a row, which is a testament to the Venetian’s commitment to unmatched service, luxurious surroundings and amenities.

The Venetian has been called one of the seven “Grandest Hotels in the World,” and between The Venetian and The Palazzo, there are five chefs who have received James Beard Awards for culinary excellence. Plus, Thomas Keller, owner and operator of Bouchon, was named by Time magazine as “America’s Best Chef.” With award-winning lodging, dining, and of course Las Vegas caliber entertainment, attendees may decide to extend their stay.
