Combatting Tooth Decay: Three Ways to Help Kids Get a Passing Grade in Oral Health this School Year

Posted on Monday, August 17, 2015

OAK BROOK, Ill.Aug. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As a new school year begins for students across the nation, many parents may be thinking about school supplies, earlier bedtimes, and homework. But with tooth decay being one of the most common diseases among children, Delta Dental is reminding parents of three key items that shouldn't be overlooked when preparing kids for a healthy and successful school year:

  • Schedule a back-to-school dentist visit. More than 30 percent of parents report their children between the ages of six and 12 missed school due to an oral health problem. Head off dental issues that may distract your child from learning and cause missed class time by scheduling regular dentist appointments for check-ups and preventive care.

  • Encourage children to practice good oral hygiene habits every day. Brushing gently for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste should be part of their morning and bedtime routines, along with flossing at least once a day.

  • Pack healthy school lunches. Quick swaps to cut down on sugary lunchbox standards include:

    • Whole wheat bread instead of white bread

    • Multigrain crackers instead of potato chips

    • Apple slices instead of cookies

    • White milk or water instead of fruit juice

    • Mini carrots instead of candy bars

    • Low fat yogurt instead of chocolate pudding

    • No sugar added jelly instead of regular jelly

    • Grapes instead of raisins

    • Fresh fruit instead of pre-packaged fruit cups

    • Hummus instead of store-bought ranch dip

"Eating too much sugar at lunch time, or at any meal throughout the day, is bad for kids' oral and overall health and can leave them feeling sluggish or struggling to focus on school work," said Dr. Bill Kohn, Delta Dental Plans Association Vice President of Dental Science and Policy. "By making simple changes to school lunches, scheduling regular check-ups with the dentist, and teaching kids the importance of incorporating brushing and flossing into their daily routines, parents can help kids establish and maintain a lifetime of good oral health."

Tooth decay, which is largely preventable, remains one of the most common chronic diseases for children — five times as common as asthma, and seven times as common as hay fever, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Parents can get their children involved in making sure each of these healthy steps are completed throughout the school year by sharing tips from Delta Dental's Grin! for Kids magazine with them.

Posted on Monday, August 17, 2015

MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc., the world's largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental, animal health and medical practitioners, announced today the creation of the Henry Schein Cares Medal, which will be awarded annually to organizations that demonstrate excellence in expanding access to care for the underserved.

The Henry Schein Cares Medal reflects the Company's commitment, since its founding in 1932, to serving society. Through the Henry Schein Cares global corporate social responsibility program, the Company uses its resources to support health care professionals around the world who provide care for those who would otherwise receive little or no medical attention. The medal will honor organizations whose work has been especially effective in bringing care to those in need.

Nine finalists will be selected among applicants from the fields of oral health, animal health and medical health. From those nine finalists, a medalist will be selected from each field, for a total of three medalists. Each of the nine finalists will receive $10,000 worth of product from Henry Schein, Inc. for use in caring for the underserved, and each of the three medalists will receive an additional $15,000 in cash from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc. to support their charitable work. The finalists will be notified in January 2016, and the medalists will be announced at a gala event in New York City later in 2016.

"Our Company has been built on the concept of doing well by doing good," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "But we also know that we cannot do good by ourselves. Our work is enriched by the selfless health care practitioners – dentists, physicians, veterinarians, and their teams – who volunteer to care for those in need. To support their work, we have established the Henry Schein Cares Medal, which will recognize their contribution to society and encourage others to follow in their footsteps."

To be considered a candidate for this award, applicants must be a non-profit organization or trust that is tax-exempt under IRS Section 501(c)(3) and that is a public charity (not a private foundation). The applicant should demonstrate that the program has expanded access to health care for the underserved in a novel and innovative way that is measurable and quantifiable. Emphasis will be placed on expanding access to health care for children (birth to age 18), although all efforts to expand access to care will be considered, including those involving animal health. Programs also should involve an established multi-disciplinary team that demonstrates the expertise needed for a comprehensive solution to expand access to care. Lastly, programs should demonstrate potential for replication and large-scale impact, and should include a business plan or demonstration of financial sustainability. Nominations will be accepted beginning August 17, 2015, through midnight Eastern time on November 1, 2015.

A panel of expert judges from the fields of medicine, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship and business will evaluate the applications and select the finalists and medalists.

Proper Occlusion May Be the Key to a Healthy Smile

Posted on Thursday, August 13, 2015

The August edition of The Roundtable presented by Inside Dentistry magazine discusses occlusion, its importance to proper dental care, and the best ways to create ideal occlusion.

Occlusion is the way the upper and lower teeth come together when chewing or at rest. When occlusion is off and the bite does not align properly—a condition known as malocclusion—it can lead to health problems, including TMJ pain, tooth fractures, and migraines. Many studies also link malocclusion to sleep disorders, gum recession, and even poor posture associated with neck and back pain. To ensure that dental treatments are successful in the long term, it is important for dentists to understand proper occlusion concepts.

Occlusion is a complicated subject, and the experts at The Roundtable discuss and explain some of its more confusing aspects in this exclusive new video.

“Learning how to treat patients from an occlusal perspective is very important to good dentistry,” said Dr. John Cranham, DDS, clinical director, The Dawson Academy. “If you understand occlusion and have the proper training, you will have an unbelievably fun career as a dentist. If you do not, it will be an unpleasant place to go to work. It just comes down to being productive, and a good knowledge of occlusion will get you there.”

This month’s panelists include Gary Alex, DMD, a member of the Inside Dentistry editorial board, cofounder of the Long Island Center for Advanced Dentistry who maintains a private practice focused on cosmetic dentistry in Huntington, NY. Thomas Basta, DDS, cofounder, director, and chairman of the Restorative Department of the Foundation for Advanced Continuing Education (FACE), who maintains a private practice at the FACE teaching facility in Burlingame, CA. John Cranham, DDS, a member of the Inside Dentistry editorial board and clinical director of The Dawson Academy who is in private practice in Chesapeake, VA.

You can watch the complete video discussion on the Inside Dentistry website at https://www.dentalaegis.com/id/roundtable/Occlusion360.

Inside Dentistry would like to thank The Dawson Academy for its generous support of this program.

3Shape Now Open to Planmeca Products

Posted on Wednesday, August 12, 2015

COPENHAGEN (Business Wire) - 3Shape and Planmeca have created an integration that enables 3Shape users to import digital impressions and case information from the Planmeca PlanScan® intraoral scanner and use these for design in 3Shape Dental System™. The second part of the integration allows 3Shape CAD/CAM users to output the CAD files to a Planmeca PlanMill® 40 milling machine in a fully integrated workflow.

3Shape Dental System CAD/CAM software presently accepts open (STL) digital impression files from most commercial intraoral scanners. The integration with Planmeca will enable 3Shape users to receive both the Planmeca PlanScan intraoral scan file as well as case information. Case information includes margin line definition by the dentist and the case order form - additional data that improve technical and clinical validation for both the dentist and laboratory.

Using 3Shape CAD/CAM software, dental professionals can design dental restorative components such as crowns, veneers, or bridges, and then manufacture the components using the Planmeca PlanMill 40 milling machine. The designs can be made on scans from 3Shape laboratory scanners, 3Shape TRIOS®, Planmeca PlanScan, or third-party scanners.

“3Shape teaming up with Planmeca opens the door to more business opportunities and restorative treatment options for both dentists and dental laboratories. Dental professionals can now take advantage of a broader range of restorative materials for their patients. We are very proud to be driving these integrations, partnerships we believe will improve patient care and digital dentistry,” says Flemming Thorup, president and CEO, 3Shape.

Jukka Kanerva, Vice President of Planmeca CAD/CAM Solutions, said, "We have always believed in an open system approach where dental professionals have the freedom to use what they are most comfortable with in order to provide patients with the best care. We look forward to working with other companies like 3Shape, to improve the user and patient experience. In the end, a happy patient is what matters most and we have confidence that this integration with 3Shape will work towards that goal."

Prosthodontists Applaud the New CODA Standards for Prosthodontic Education

Posted on Wednesday, August 12, 2015

CHICAGO, Aug. 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association (ADA) has passed new Standards for Advanced Education Programs in Prosthodontics. These new Standards recognize digital dentistry and competence in the restoration and surgical placement of dental implants as an integral part of specialty education in prosthodontics.

As the national association representing the dental specialty of prosthodontists, the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) applauds these new Standards.

"This is a historic step. It moves the specialty in a direction that defines what prosthodontists are and what they will be," said ACP President Frank J. Tuminelli, DMD, FACP, who has been practicing implant therapy in his private practice for more than 25 years, as well as his role as the Program Director at a New York Presbyterian / Queens hospital-based prosthodontics graduate residency program. "This ensures that every prosthodontist will deliver optimal oral health care for the patients we serve."

Presently, 90% of graduate programs are teaching implant surgery as part of their comprehensive oral health care education at the specialty level. With the adoption of these new Standards, 100% of graduating prosthodontists will be surgically competent in placing dental implants.

The new Standards are scheduled for implementation on July 1, 2016, at which point all dental practitioners who pursue specialty training in prosthodontics will be competent in the surgical placement of dental implants, as defined in the Standards.

"The new Standards represent a comprehensive and visionary re-write that defines the very best in oral health care and futures for the patients we serve," said Stephen D. Campbell, DDS, MMSc, FACP, who is Head of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry's Restorative Department and the Prosthodontic Commissioner of CODA. "The Standards guide our educators as to the core didactic and clinical content that must be met by all programs and graduating students. They include competency in the diagnostic basis of prosthodontics and digital dentistry, as well as all aspects of implant supported therapy, including surgical implant placement."

"This has changed our specialty and our profession, forever and for the better. It enables us to care for our patients with the level of expertise they deserve," said Dr. Tuminelli.
