D&S Dental Laboratory Celebrates 45 Years in Business

Posted on Thursday, August 31, 2017

D&S Dental Laboratory, Inc., proudly celebrates its 45th anniversary this October. Dick and Sally Pilsner founded the company as a “mom and pop” denture shop in October 1972.

From its modest beginnings, D&S has grown to become a full-service Certified Dental Laboratory with 100 employees, including six shareholders, in five locations. D&S remains one of the largest privately-owned laboratories in Wisconsin.

While the majority of its business comes from Wisconsin and northern Illinois, the company provides restorations to doctors in more than half the states in the country and continues to expand nationally.

D&S is recognized as an industry leader in the incorporation of technology in the production process, combining state-of-the-art technology and production techniques with an experienced staff of technicians, including one dozen Certified Dental Technicians.

In addition to its Waunakee location, D&S operates four satellite laboratories in Baraboo, Eau Claire, and Greenfield, Wisconsin, as well as Rockford, Illinois. Its Waunakee headquarters is DAMAS accredited, placing it among less than 1 percent of dental laboratories that follow the best quality-assurance processes in the business. In 2014, D&S Dental Laboratory received the Friends of Dentistry Award from the Wisconsin Dental Association for its ongoing contributions to the dental industry.

Henry Schein’s 20th Annual ‘Back To School’ Program Helps More Than 5,000 Kids Return To The Classroom With Confidence

Posted on Thursday, August 31, 2017

Team Schein Provides Underserved Kids Around the World with Backpacks, School Supplies, and New Clothes

Henry Schein, Inc. is helping children around the world return to the classroom ready to learn by providing them with backpacks, school supplies, and new clothes through its 20th annual “Back to School” program. This year, more than 5,000 children will participate in the program at 30 Henry Schein locations in the U.S., Canada, Scotland, and Spain. Since the program’s inception in 1998, it has helped nearly 50,000 children head back to school equipped for success.

In addition to classroom essentials, children participating in the “Back to School” program also receive books and hygiene products donated by Henry Schein, and at many program events, first-day-of-school outfits purchased by Team Schein Members. The “Back to School” program is a flagship initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility program.

“For 20 years, our Team Schein Members have helped children in need meet the challenges of a new school year with confidence, and in that time we have watched them grow, mature, and achieve,” said Gerry Benjamin, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Henry Schein. “It is rewarding to have played a small part in their achievements, and serves to reinforce our commitment to the ‘Back to School’ program.”

Last Thursday, approximately 550 children and their families participated in a “Back to School” event hosted by the company at its worldwide headquarters in Melville, N.Y. where, in addition to new clothes and school supplies, they also enjoyed dinner, games, music, crafts, dress-up stations, and other fun activities. A video from last week’s event can be viewed here https://youtu.be/2oOwaQD7Rq4.

“The backpack that I received at one of these events lasted me until I finished college, so I’m very appreciative of the support my family and I have received through the ‘Back to School’ program,” said previous program participant and Dartmouth College graduate, Keyry Alvarez-Carcamo. “Getting school supplies may seem like a little thing, but it’s an opportunity, and meeting all of these great people and volunteers who are going to be in your life for a long time drives home what this program is really all about.”

The company partnered with 11 local social service organizations to pre-identify the participating children and their families: Bethany House; Espoir Youth Program, Inc.; Family and Children's Association; Family Service League; Hispanic Counseling Center; Madonna Heights; Nassau County Department of Social Services; Northwell Health, The Raymar Children's Fund; WellLife Network; and YES Community Counseling Center.

“For a family that struggles to make ends meet, the ‘Back to School’ program means so much more than just a backpack, books, and new clothes,” said Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President and Chief Executive Officer, Family and Children’s Association. “It means that those children are able to walk into the classroom with their heads held high. For more than 130 years, our organization has depended on community partnerships to help our families through difficult times, and Henry Schein has been a valued partner for two decades. We thank Team Schein Members around the world for their kindness and generosity toward those who need it most.”

Exploring Periodontitis in Patients With Chédiak-Higashi Syndrome

Posted on Thursday, August 31, 2017

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published an article titled "Periodontitis in Chédiak-Higashi Syndrome: An Altered Immunoinflammatory Response" in the JDR Clinical & Translational Research (JDR CTR). In this study, Vivek Thumbigere Math, from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and authors from other institutes of NIH as well as the State University of Campinas, Piracicaba Dental School, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil sought to determine the periodontal status of patients with severe and mild forms of Chédiak-Higashi syndrome (CHS), a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the lysosomal trafficking regulator gene (LYST) — a gene that codes for a protein that helps with protein packaging and transport within cells.

Chédiak-Higashi syndrome is characterized by a type of albinism that affects the eyes, skin and hair as well as abnormal bleeding, recurrent bacterial infections, impaired immune and neurological function, and is often associated with aggressive periodontitis. Previous research suggests that LYST mutations affect toll-like receptors (TLRs), leading to frequent infections. TLRs comprise a family of proteins that normally senses bacterial threats and helps generate a host response to disease-causing bacteria.

This study investigated the periodontal status in patients with "classic" or more severe CHS, and patients with "atypical" or more moderate CHS. The researchers also examined the effect of LYST mutations on expression of two members of the TLR family, TLR-2 and TLR-4, and on the immune-regulating functions of gingival fibroblasts in CHS patients. Gingival fibroblasts help form the tooth-supporting gum tissue and secrete cytokines and other molecules that facilitate cell-to-cell communication. As a standard of care, all patients with classic CHS had undergone bone marrow transplantation (BMT), while none of the atypical CHS patients received BMT.

The authors noted that in contrast to aged-matched healthy individuals, atypical CHS patients and classic CHS patients exhibited mild chronic periodontitis with no evidence of gingival ulceration, severe tooth mobility, or premature exfoliation of teeth. Compared to gingival fibroblasts obtained from healthy donors, gingival fibroblasts obtained from classic CHS patients and atypical CHS patients displayed higher baseline expression of TLR-2 and lower baseline expression of TLR-4. When treated with extract from Fusobacterium nucleatum, a species of bacteria associated with periodontal disease, gingival fibroblasts from both classic and atypical CHS patients failed to increase production of TLR-2 and TLR-4 compared to the untreated cells or cells from healthy patients. Researchers also found that when exposed to F. nucleatum extract, gingival fibroblast cells from patients with atypical CHS expressed increased cytokine production compared to gingival fibroblast cells from classic CHS patients. These results suggest that LYST mutations may affect TLR-2 and TLR-4 expression and function, and lead to a dysregulated immunoinflammatory response, which in turn influences the periodontal disease phenotype noted in CHS patients.

"This study provides a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing the periodontal disease process and perhaps other situations in which the patients have altered TLRs and immune cell dysfunction," said JDR CTR Editor Jocelyne Feine. "This is also the first study to report the periodontal findings in atypical CHS patients and it raises new hypotheses for future research, plus the need for personalized intervention strategies tailored to an individual's host response."

This study can be used to create awareness among clinicians and researchers that not all CHS patients exhibit historically reported aggressive periodontitis. The results also show that periodontitis susceptibility in CHS is mainly mediated by hematopoietic cells — the cells that give rise to immune cells and other blood cells — and that classic CHS patients who underwent a bone marrow transplant early in life and atypical CHS patients are less susceptible to aggressive periodontitis when compared with classic CHS patients who never receive BMT.

The investigators of this study express their sincere gratitude to research patients and their families, as well as the grant funding institutions. The study was supported by the NIAMS (under award numbers ZIAAR041196 and K99AR069643), the National Human Genome Research Institute, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Research Shows Elevated Oral Health Risk in Pregnant Women

Posted on Thursday, August 31, 2017

MADRID, Aug. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Data from the Oral Hygiene and Maternity Outcomes Multicenter (OHMOM) study were presented today at the World Dental Congress (WDC) in Madrid, Spain. Research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Alabama - Birmingham, with support from Procter & Gamble (P&G), makers of Crest and Oral-B Oral Care brands, found that the occurrence and severity of pregnancy gingivitis substantially exceeded national averages, with evidence of substantial disease onset across broad demographic and socio-economic sub-groups beginning in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Gingivitis is caused by the accumulation of plaque bacteria on teeth, particularly along the gumline. Plaque irritates the gums and stimulates a chronic inflammatory response, causing them to become red, swollen, tender and bleed easily during brushing or flossing.1 Pregnant women have a higher risk of developing gum disease because of hormonal shifts, which affect baseline physiology and inflammatory reactions in the body.2

The OHMOM study evaluated 648 women (age 18-46 years) who were between 8-26 weeks of pregnancy to determine oral health and maternity outcomes. Findings from baseline measurements provide important insight on the epidemiology of pregnancy gingivitis. Study results showed moderate-to-severe gingivitis during pregnancy was common, with onset in the first trimester. Severity was extraordinarily high –averaging 51.1 bleeding sites – which represents nearly one-third of the gingiva with inflammation and bleeding. This disease level is approximately three times higher in pregnant women compared to the average adult. Risk was nearly universal, and typical health disparity factors like ethnicity, socio-economic and insurance coverage did not significantly impact disease levels.

"This new research provides a clear perspective on the epidemiology of gingivitis during pregnancy, and particularly on the universality and severity of gingivitis," said Robert W. Gerlach, DDS, MPH, Research Fellow, Worldwide Clinical Investigations, Procter & Gamble. "Women likely have their highest levels of gingival inflammation – with nearly one-third of the gingiva bleeding – during pregnancy." Dr. Gerlach reported "with the proper education and oral hygiene, pregnancy gingivitis can be effectively managed, leading to improved oral health for expectant mothers." Some studies indicate there may be an association between poor maternal oral health and pre-term birth.3

What This Means for Moms-to-be

If you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, do not ignore your oral health. A healthy mouth is an important part of a healthy pregnancy. Visit your dental professional regularly, make sure your toothpaste and mouthrinse are made to fight gingivitis - many choices do not contain anti-gingivitis ingredients. Remove more plaque with better brushing and regular flossing. Switching to an electric toothbrush, for example, can make a big difference in consumers' at home plaque removal.

About the Study4

To evaluate the relationships of oral health and maternity outcomes, comprehensive baseline evaluations involved three areas: 1) pertinent demographic, socio-economic and behavioral parameters, 2) medical, pregnancy and medication history, and 3) oral/periodontal health including whole mouth clinical measurement of gingivitis bleeding sites via the Loe-Silness Gingivitis Index. Regression analysis was used to model relationships between baseline parameters and gingivitis status during pregnancy.

The study was supported by P&G Oral Care.
