The AAOM Supports Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month

(PRWEB) April 01, 2013

During the month of April, all over the country, there will be opportunities to participate in walk-a-thons to support oral, head and neck cancer awareness month. All money raised for these walks will go towards research and education for oral cancer. Dental and medical professionals can also add their own awareness event to the Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness calendar. AAOM along with the Oral Cancer Foundation will help and support professionals who wish to organize a free screening event in their office for their community. By working with the Oral Cancer Foundation, AAOM hopes to promote early detection for these cancers that are often diagnosed too late.

In Cancer Facts and Figures 2013, the American Cancer Society estimates roughly 41,380 new cases of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year. Of those new cases, they estimate 7,890 Americans will die from this disease. The report also revealed that men are more likely to develop the cancer than women. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, the two major links to the cancer is the use of tobacco and alcohol as well as exposure to the Human Papilloma Virus version 16.

AAOM believes dental professionals can play a vital role in reducing the number of people diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Promoting early detection and a healthy lifestyle, eliminating or reducing the use of tobacco and alcohol paired with a healthy diet, is key in reducing the occurrence of oral cancer.

About AAOM:
