Understanding Peri-Implant Diseases: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment

Peri-implant diseases (eg, periimplant mucositis and peri-implantitis) are becoming increasingly prevalent among dental implant patients. This article reviews the etiology, risk factors, prevention, and diagnosis of peri-implant diseases, as well as treatment techniques. In particular, a combination approach is described that has demonstrated predictable10-year success rates.

About the Authors

Dr. Froum is a Clinical Professor and Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York College of Dentistry in New York, New York. He also has a private practice in New York, New York.

Dr. Rosen is a Clinical Associate Professor of Periodontics at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore, Maryland. He also has a private practice in both Yardley, PA and in New York, New York.
