Figure 1 | Reducing bacterial load through mechanical or chemical means is a key component of maintaining oral health, but that is changing with probiotics. Oragenics’ scientists have been at the forefront of more than 30 years of research on bacteria-bacteria interactions in plaque biofilm. Their efforts have resulted in the introduction of EvoraPro®. EvoraPro is an extra-strength probiotics product intended for long-term at-home use by patients after a professional hygiene visit.
Most of the estimated 700 species of bacteria that can be found in the oral cavity are harmless. However, some species can cause a shift from oral health when they achieve sufficiently large numbers in localized areas. Because a small number of species can play an important role in maintaining the micro-ecological balance in the oral cavity, a novel approach was proposed for controlling the harmful effects of oral plaque buildup—augment the host on a regular basis with beneficial bacteria. The result has been the development and launch of the active ingredient in EvoraPro, called ProBiora3®.
ProBiora3 contains a proprietary blend of three select oral bacterial strains: Streptococcus oralis KJ3® and Streptococcus uberis KJ2® for maintaining gingival health and Streptococcus rattus JH145® for maintaining dental health. EvoraPro contains high-strength probiotic tablets to help replenish and stabilize levels of beneficial bacteria and should be used for long-term maintenance between office visits to maintain a healthy bacterial balance. This balance can be periodically disrupted by a variety of factors, including stress, disease, antibiotics, unhealthy food, poor oral hygiene practices, and harmful environmental conditions.
EvoraPro represents a natural approach for oral health maintenance between office visits. A high level of ProBiora3 is most beneficial when delivered following a professional hygiene visit that may include root planing and scaling. As an adjunct to any recommended home oral hygiene regimen, EvoraPro is especially suited to patients in maintenance, those with poor home oral hygiene compliance, or any patients with special challenges because of physical impairment or salivary flow problems.
