ZIMMER BIOMET - Combining Strengths to Shape the Future of Dental Implantology

On June 24, 2015, the parent companies of Zimmer Dental, Inc. and BIOMET 3i, LLC joined forces to create Zimmer Biomet, a world leader in musculoskeletal and oral healthcare. By combining the strengths of these two industry leaders, Zimmer Biomet’s Dental Division is well-positioned to influence the future of implant dentistry.

David Josza, General Manager of Zimmer Biomet’s Dental Division, is in the process of defining the vision and strategy for the new company, as well as building a world-class team to capitalize upon growing opportunities for dental implants. Josza credits this growth to improvements in implant and implant-related products for their broader acceptance among both clinicians and their patients as the preferred solution for tooth replacement. “Many advances have been made in the way manufacturers develop and design their products in order to achieve optimal outcomes, which in turn has led to more widespread acceptance of dental implants as a regular treatment option,” he says. He cites the example of the BIOMET 3i T3® Implant, which is designed to deliver esthetic results through tissue preservation, as one such improvement. “This implant incorporates key elements like a contemporary hybrid surface, a stable and tight implant/abutment interface, and integrated platform switching, which is provided by a medialized implant/abutment junction,” Josza maintains.

Another important implant making its debut later this year is Zimmer Dental’s new 3.1 mmD Eztetic™ Implant. For the first time, three concepts have been combined to create a precise implant-abutment connection designed to reduce micromovement and microleakage. This unique connection consists of a conical interface, platform switch and Double Friction-Fit™ technology to create a strong narrow-diameter implant indicated for all anterior areas.

Josza also describes how advances in other types of technology, especially CAD/CAM, have contributed to the growing popularity of implants. “For many patients and their dentists, having a custom CAD/CAM restoration—as opposed to using stock parts and pieces—has become a popular alternative, as it allows for something that truly ‘matches’ the patient,” he explains. One such solution is the BellaTek® Encode® Impression System, which allows clinicians to create a custom, patient-specific restoration by capturing crucial information to make a custom restoration while helping to ensure that the patient’s chairtime is minimized.

“Digital dentistry continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.” expresses Mr. Josza. “To remain on the forefront of this trend, Zimmer Biomet will bring together advanced technologies from both BIOMET 3i and Zimmer’s Zfx™ digital dentistry solutions to offer an unparalleled range of products and services for this sector of the industry.”

“One of our top priorities is to provide clinicians with access to excellence in education and opportunities to learn about the latest advances. We will, therefore, combine two world-class learning institutes to establish the Zimmer Biomet Institute. BIOMET 3i’s Institute for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry (IIRD®) and the Zimmer Institute will unite leading-edge technology with evidence-based dentistry to enhance the knowledge of clinicians and other dental professionals around the world.”

Zimmer Biomet’s Dental division, says Josza, will continue to focus its efforts on challenges faced by clinicians to meet patient expectations. “Implantology is about the solutions that you are ultimately offering clinicians so they can provide exceptional outcomes to patients. It’s not just what we make; it’s what we make possible.”
