Consumer Guide Offers Patient-Friendly Primer on Dental Implants

D. Walter Cohen, DDS, Editor Emeritus

More than 14% of the American population has lost all of their teeth, and 150 million individuals are missing one or more teeth. Dental implants are becoming more popular as a treatment option to replace the lost body part and restore normal function.

A volume written for the consumer—potential candidates for implants—as well as for dentists interested in implant reconstruction, details the history of implants, describes the procedures in which they are utilized, and provides a number of successful case histories. Edited by highly respected clinician Charles A. Babbush, DDS, MScD, As Good As New: A Consumer’s Guide to Dental Implants has received national awards and is currently in its second printing.

For the layperson, this volume is a great resource when considering tooth replacement. The text is easy to read, and the book is well illustrated with color photographs and drawings. Dr. Babbush takes the patient step-by-step through the examination, diagnosis, and treatment plan for candidates needing implants. Featured in the book is a detailed description of how bone grafting makes it possible to insert implants in areas where the bone has resorbed. The case histories are quite convincing, describing how individuals have benefitted from this approach. The success rate is greater than 95%, which is quite impressive.

The volume informs patients how to find an implant doctor that is right for their needs, what will happen below and above their gums, and what approach to take should they need more than implants. It also discusses potential drawbacks and educates patients how to live with and maintain their new implants.

The dental field is grateful to Dr. Babbush for recognizing the public need for this contribution to the literature at a time when consumers want to know more about dental implants. If this text was given to patients, it would deepen their appreciation for their dentist.

Moderately priced, this volume is available at www.thedentalimplantcenter.com.
