AAPD Names New Board Officers and Trustees

CHICAGO, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the authority on children's oral health, inducted the new President and other Officers and Trustees for the AAPD Board of Trustees during its 65th Annual Session at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina on May 27, 2012.

Joel H. Berg, D.D.S., M.S., President. Berg has been a member of the AAPD for 26 years. He attended dental school at and received his pediatric dentistry certificate from the University of Iowa. He most recently served as president-elect (2011-2012), vice president (2010-2011) and the AAPD's District VI trustee (2006-2009). Berg is also a past president of Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: the Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to his leadership roles with the Academy, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a fellow of the International College of Dentists. Berg is the Dean Designate at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Currently, he is Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and also the Director of Dentistry at Seattle Children's Hospital, and the holder of the Lloyd and Kay Chapman Chair for Oral Health. Dr. Berg's AAPD presidential agenda will focus on talent pool development and international collaborations. Berg resides in Bellevue, Washington. He has lectured in more than 35 countries and enjoys studying the viticulture of Washington State. Berg is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Warren A. Brill, D.M.D., M.S. (Hygiene), President-Elect. Brill has a full-time private practice in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been an AAPD member for the past 19 years. He received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland and the School of Medicine of Johns Hopkins University. Brill is a former AAPD secretary-treasurer (2010-2011), vice-president (2011-2012) and member of the board of trustees of the AAPD, representing District II (2005-2008). Prior to his Board election, he was chair of the AAPD Council on Government Affairs and expert consultant to the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. He has also served as chair of the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. Brill is chair of the Maryland Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (MAPD) Legislative Affairs Committee (2000-2012), member of the MAPD Executive Committee (2000-2012) and chair of the MAPD Annual Meeting General Arrangements Committee (2006-2012). Brill also serves as a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration, section on Oral Medical Devices. He is a fellow of the AAPD, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Presently, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland. Brill is the 2009 recipient of the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year Award. He resides in Maryland with his wife, Eva. They have two daughters, one grandson, two granddaughters and a frisky Airedale Terrier, Oliver. Brill is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Edward H. Moody, Jr., D.D.S., Vice President. Moody is in private practice in Morristown, Tennessee. He is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, and received his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Medical College of Virginia. He has been a member of the AAPD for 25 years. A Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, he is active in numerous professional organizations, including the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, where he served on the Board of Directors and completed his term as president in 2004. His involvement in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has included seats on the Council on Clinical Affairs, Annual Session Committee, Local Arrangements Committee for the 2000 Annual Session in Nashville, PAC Steering Committee, and as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, for which he was awarded the Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award in 2003. During his term on the AAPD Board of Trustees, he was a member of the Budget & Finance and Strategic Planning Committees, and was Board Liaison to the PAC Steering Committee and the Council on Communications. A Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, his community activities include a term on the Executive Board of the Great Smoky Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America, positions on numerous church councils and committees, and a long standing membership on the Board of Directors of the Boy's and Girl's Club of Morristown. Robert L. Delarosa, D.D.S., Secretary-Treasurer. Delarosa is the founding partner in a group private practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He received his dental degree from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and his certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has been a member of AAPD for 25 years and has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry since 1991. Prior to serving as the District V Trustee, he was Chair of the Council on Clinical Affairs, the District V Representative to the AAPD Political Action Committee, and the Louisiana State Leader for the AAPD Head Start Dental Home Oral Health Initiative. As the District V Trustee, he also served on the Budget and Finance Committee and Ethics and Credentials Committee, as well as Liaison to the Council on Clinical Affairs and the AAP Section on Oral Health. Delarosa is a native of New Orleans and resides in Baton Rouge with his wife Mary and their twins, Matt and Sara.

Jessica Y. Lee, D.D.S., M.P.H., Ph.D., Parliamentarian. Lee is an Associate Professor and currently on the faculty of both the Departments of Pediatric Dentistry in the School of Dentistry and Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also serves as the Director of the School of Dentistry's Health Services Research Program. She is currently the Chair for the AAPD Council on Scientific Affairs and also serves as a consultant to numerous other AAPD councils including, the Council on Governmental Affairs, Council on Dental Benefit Programs, and the Council on Postdoctoral Education. Lee received her M.P.H. and D.D.S. degrees from Columbia University and her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was also a NIDCR National Research Service Award recipient and Post-doc fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. She is a board certified Pediatric Dentist and an active member of the medical staff at UNC Hospitals and practices in the Dental Faculty Practice in the School of Dentistry. She has authored more than 100 peer reviewed manuscripts and abstracts. She is involved in teaching, clinical practice and research and maintains several research grants. Lee is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards including the 2008 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Jerome Miller "For the Kids" Award. In 2010, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Barack Obama. In 2011, Lee was named the "Pediatric Dentist of the Year" by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Lee is an avid runner and has completed over 35 marathons.

Rhea M. Haugseth, D.M.D., Immediate Past-President. Haugseth has been an AAPD member for 30 years and has maintained a private practice in Marietta, Georgia. She attended dental school at University of Louisville and received her pediatric dental certificate from Case Western Reserve University. Currently, she serves as the immediate past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Haugseth has served as the AAPD's president (2011-2012), president-elect (2010-2011), vice president (2009-2010), secretary-treasurer (2008-2009), parliamentarian (2005-2006) and the AAPD's District III trustee (2002-2005). She is a fellow of AAPD and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy of Dentistry Internationale. Haugseth is also past president of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry (2010-2011). Haugseth's family includes her father, four brothers and their wives, six nieces and nephews and her Wheaten Terrier, Maggie. She is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

Joseph B. Castellano, D.D.S., District 5 Trustee. Castellano attended the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston and received his D.D.S. degree in 1990. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency and later his specialty training in pediatric dentistry, both at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas (UTHSC-SA). He is board certified in pediatric dentistry. Castellano is an assistant clinical Professor for the Department of Developmental Dentistry at UTHSC-SA Dental School and has authored and co-authored several publications in the dental literature. He is active in the AAPD and has served on the Council on Clinical Affairs (2004-2012; chair 2009-2012), and its Committees on the Adolescent, Perinatal Oral Health, and Behavior Guidance. He has also served on the Task Force on Strengthening the Science in AAPD's Guidelines and Journals, and on the Advisory Board for the AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center. He is a graduate of the AAPD Leadership Institute and is participating in the AAPD's Advanced Leadership Institute. He is active with his state component, currently serving as immediate past-president of the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Castellano is in private practice in Laredo, Texas.

Santos Cortez, D.D.S., District 6 Trustee. Cortez received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1976 and his certificate in pediatric dentistry and cleft palate rehabilitation in 1976 from USC. He is past chair of the Government Affairs Council of the California Dental Association and is a member of the CDA Foundation Board of Advisors. He is past president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry and past District 6 representative to the Council on Government Affairs of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Cortez was a member of the 2009 ADA-HOD Reference Committee on Governmental/Public Affairs and participated in the ADA's Washington Leadership Conference. He maintains a private practice in Long Beach, and is an Associate Clinic Instructor at the Children's Dental Health Clinic, Miller Children's Hospital, Long Beach, where he is an Active Staff member. His association memberships are AAPD, HDA, ADA and he is a Fellow of ACD and ICD. Local activities include advocacy for children's oral health and current chair of Long Beach Children's Oral Health Taskforce. Personal interests include golf, international dental missions and attending his five grandchildren's activities.

Catherine M. Flaitz, D.D.S, M.S., Academic Trustee at Large. Flaitz is professor of the Departments of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences and of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD). She is also adjunct faculty in the Campus-Wide Ethics Program, through The McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and holds an adjunct appointment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Previously, she served as interim dean (2002-2004), dean (2004-2009), chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences (2002) and director of the surgical oral pathology laboratory service (1992-2004). She maintains an active intramural practice treating children and adults with a wide range of oral health problems and complex medical conditions. Flaitz earned her dental degree from Creighton University and received specialty certification and a Master of Science degree in pediatric dentistry, followed by specialty certification in oral and maxillofacial pathology from The University of Iowa. She is board certified in oral and maxillofacial pathology. Flaitz is a member of the Council on Clinical Affairs, the editorial board for Pediatric Dentistry, and faculty for the course, Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry. For 10 years, she served on the Research Committee (Council for Scientific Affairs). She was the first full time academician to support the President's Circle of the AAPD Foundation and has participated in the Grants and Fellowship Committee and the Recognition Awards Committee. She is a fellow in both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

Flaitz has been a recipient of numerous teaching, journalism, and research awards from a variety of institutions and professional organizations. Most recently, she was honored with the 2011 President's Service Recognition Award for Dedication and Willingness to Speak Out for Houston and Texas' Children, sponsored by Children at Risk. She has published over 285 original papers in dental and medical journals, and authored or co-authored 25 book chapters and monographs and a color atlas.

William Greenhill, D.M.D., American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Director. Greenhill is in private practice in Union, Kentucky and serves as an adjunct assistant professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He attended dental school at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in Jackson, Mississippi. Upon graduation in 1989, Dr. Greenhill entered the United States Air Force and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Langley AFB, VA in 1990. He received his certificate in pediatric dentistry from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 1995. Greenhill served as Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Yokota AB, Japan and Barksdale AFB, LA, and left the service in 1999. He received his American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification in 2001. Greenhill has served as an examiner for the American Board since 2005. He served as Chair of Part IV of the Oral Clinical Exam from 2006-2007 and has served as Chair of Part B of the Oral Clinical Exam from 2009-2011. Greenhill and his wife, Beth, reside in Union, Kentucky, with their four children.
