Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

To recognize National Orthodontic Health Month and educate the public about oral health treatment options, University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is offering free orthodontic evaluations to children and adults throughout October.

The free visit with include a consultation with an orthodontic faculty member and resident; an opportunity to learn about treatment options including Invisalign®; and information about the cost and length of treatment. Evaluations typically take approximately 30-45 minutes.

“We’re excited to offer this service to the public and share more about the important role orthodontic care plays in oral health, overall physical health and emotional well-being,” said Orthodontic Clinic Manager Deborah Marini. “The free consultations are a great opportunity for anyone who is curious about treatment options or thinking about investing in orthodontic care for themselves or a family member.”

Appointments are necessary and are offered between 8 am–5 pm, Monday through Friday and on Thursdays until 8 pm. The Redmond Family Orthodontic Clinic is located on the first floor at 2155 Webster Street in San Francisco. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 415-929-6555 or visit https://dental.pacific.edu/Dental_Services/Clinics/Orthodontic_Clinic/Orthodontic_Clinic_Services.html.

The clinic offers a full range of orthodontic services for children and adults, with fees that typically run 30-40 percent lower than an average private orthodontic practice. Treatment is provided by orthodontic residents under the close supervision of faculty. The clinic is equipped to treat patients with special needs—including cleft lip and palate patients—and surgical cases.

National Orthodontic Health Month is sponsored by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the oldest and largest dental specialty organization in the world, established in 1900. The AAO recommends that children get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By this age, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. That’s important, because some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they are found early. Most orthodontic patients begin active treatment between ages 9 and 14.

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at almost any age. According to the AAO, about one in every five orthodontic patients today is over age 18. Thanks to smaller, less visible, more comfortable orthodontic appliances, including fixed braces and removable appliances, adults are finding treatment more appealing.
