Tokyo – Penn Dental Medicine continued to build upon its global initiatives on a recent trip to Tokyo, Japan, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and presenting the 5th Penn Endodontic Global Symposium.
Dr. Denis Kinane, Morton Amsterdam Dean of Penn Dental Medicine, signed a renewed MOU agreement last month with Dr. Junji Tagami, Dean of the TMDU Graduate School of Medical and Dental Science, outlining future collaborations in research and student and faculty exchange between the two institutions. Dr. Takashi Ohyama, President of TMDU, also welcomed the Penn Dental Medicine delegation, which included Dr. William Cheung, President of the Penn Dental Medicine Board of Overseers, and Dr. Syngcuk Kim, Associate Dean for Global Affairs at Penn Dental Medicine. The signing ceremony was attended by key faculty members of TMDU.
The 5th Penn Endodontic Global Symposium, presented May 24 and 25 in Tokyo, drew more than 400 dentists and featured presentations by Penn Dental Medicine faculty and alumni on biofilm, nonsurgical endodontics, surgical endodontics, revascularization, implants vs. endodontics, and outcome assessment of all endodontics procedures.
Organized by the faculty of Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Endodontics, the symposium speakers included Dean Kinane; Drs. Syngcuk Kim, Martin Trope, Bekir Karabucak, and Meetu Kohli of Penn Dental Medicine; Dr. Hiroshi Ishi of Japan; Dr. Gilberto Debelian of Norway; Dr. Christof Pertl of Austria; and Dr. William Cheung of Hong Kong.
“The main purpose of the Penn Endodontic Global Symposium is to establish a global network of modern endodontic educators by presenting our teaching philosophy and interacting with dentists and endodontists around the world,” says Dr. Kim, Interim Chairman of the Department of Endodontics. “These two-day symposia were followed by many social events with participants cementing good will and friendship.”
The next Penn Endodontic Global Symposium will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 19-20, 2012, with plans underway for symposiums in Turkey in Spring 2013 and China in Fall 2013.
