Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Delta Dental of South Dakota has received a $3.3 million grant to improve the oral health and healthcare of Native Americans, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The not-for-profit corporation was selected as one of 26 organizations across the country to receive a Health Care Innovation Award aimed at assisting Native Americans. The grant will fund a 3-year project to train 24 dental hygienists and community health representatives to address community-based care and provide preventive oral healthcare to American Indian mothers, their children, and American Indian people with diabetes, according to Indian Country Today Media Network.com. The project aims to reduce the incidence of dental disease, and consequently, decrease the need for expensive surgeries.

The Health Care Innovation Awards, made possible by the Affordable Care Act, are given to entities to address the needs of a wide range of population groups, such as low-income families and individuals, the elderly, pregnant women, infants, adolescents, minorities, and individuals with special health care needs, the ICTMN report states.
