Design Dental Group Encourages Expecting Mothers to Get Dental Checkup

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

HOUSTON, May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Dentistry iQ has released an announcement that warns against the hazards of poor oral healthcare in women who are pregnant. The article cites bacteria and other harmful complications that can interfere with a healthy pregnancy. Dr. Melanie Bibb of Design Dental Group corroborates the findings of this statement with her own experiences. She urges her expecting patients to continue with a routine oral healthcare schedule in an effort to maintain the highest possible degree of health for themselves and their unborn children.

According to the aforementioned article, pregnant women who do not take proper care of their teeth are at a higher risk of premature labor. Additionally, the cavities and gum disease they can develop may contribute to underweight deliveries. Furthermore, gum disease and periodontal disease have been connected to heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and pancreatic cancer.

Pamela McClain, President of the American Academy of Periodontology, clarified why the risk for pregnant women is so high. "Many, many studies have shown that high levels of progesterone puts pregnant women at a higher risk and more susceptible to gum diseases," explained McClain. "Pregnant women who have periodontitis are two to four times more likely to have pre-term, low birthrate babies."

In addition to causing premature, under-weight birth situations, improper oral healthcare can pass harmful bacteria from mother to child. Mothers and their children can easily pass bacteria between them, as their close nature—particularly when children are young—provides plenty of opportunity for transference. For example, mothers who kiss their children and share eating utensils with them can easily share bacteria.

"At Design Dental Group, we recommend proactive dental hygiene at all stages of one's development," commented Dr. Melanie T. Bibb of Design Dental Group. "Expecting mothers may pass a health benefit to their unborn child by simply maintaining good oral hygiene before, during, and after becoming pregnant. This includes visiting your dentist early and regularly during your pregnancy, as well as your baby's early years of development. Your dentist will help educate you and your child about the best dental techniques, which will provide for a lifetime of great dental health!"

Design Dental Group encourages all of its patients to maintain proper oral hygiene habits. The practice particularly urges its pregnant patients to continue with their regular dental check-ups.
