Berlin, Germany (PRWEB) May 01, 2012 – ScienceIndex.com, a health sciences social network established in 1998 to index the latest news, headlines, references, and resources from science journals, books, and websites worldwide and which covers news in all fields of biology, business, chemistry, engineering, geography, health, mathematics, and society, has included two new categories in the field of Health Sciences: Immunology and Medicine.

While the Immunology category covers the structure and function of the immune system, innate and acquired immunity, the bodily distinction of self from nonself, and laboratory techniques involving the interaction of antigens with specific antibodies, the Medicine category covers the prevention, cure, and alleviation of diseases.

ScienceIndex.com's Health Sciences Category covers the effects of disease and medical treatment on the overall condition of organisms. Its eighteen subsections include Audiology, Dentistry, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Healthcare, Immunology, Medicine, Neurology, Nutrition, Oncology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Radiology, Rheumatology, and Surgery. Users can receive alerts if new content has been posted in this category by subscribing to ScienceIndex.com's Health RSS feed.

ScienceIndex.com's Immunology category covers the structure and function of the immune system, innate and acquired immunity, the bodily distinction of self from nonself, and laboratory techniques involving the interaction of antigens with specific antibodies. It currently contains 36,390 articles partly derived from 152 scientific journals. The latest articles in this category are also available through a Immunology Sciences RSS feed. One of the latest additions covers results of a study indicating that the rs150311303 polymorphism in FcγRIIa enhances IgG binding capacity. The authors investigated the effect of FCGR2A gene polymorphisms on susceptibility to symptomatic malaria among Ghanaian cohort children. Two major FCGR2A polymorphisms, rs1801274A/G (FcγRIIa-H131R) and rs150311303 (FcγRIIa-ins170L), were identified in the study population, and assessment of their risks did not show significant association with susceptibility to symptomatic malaria. Another recently published article in this category covers computers aid in collecting sensitive information from teens. It shows that more than one million youths ages 15-24 have sexually transmitted infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea while many more are unaware they are infected because they have not been tested.

ScienceIndex.com's Medicine category covers the prevention, cure, and alleviation of diseases. It currently contains 27,266 articles partly derived from 163 scientific journals. The latest articles in this category are also available through a Medicine Sciences RSS feed. One recently included article in this category presents results of a pilot study indicating that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) may improve residual renal function (RRF) in hemodialysis patients. Administration of NAC resulted in significant improvement in RRF. The authors indicate that N-acetylcysteine may improve RRF in patients treated with chronic hemodialysis. Another recently published article presents the effect of Tolfenamic Acid on Canine Cancer Cell Proliferation, Specificity Protein (Sp) Transcription Factors, and Sp-Regulated Proteins in Canine Osteosarcoma, Mammary Carcinoma, and Melanoma Cells. The authors conclude that Tolfenamic acid is a potential anticancer NSAID and further investigation is needed to determine its usefulness in a clinical setting.
