Viewpoint: An Interview with Larry Bodony

Looking to the future of digital dentistry

1. What are the most impactful trends that you are observing today in the evolution of digital dentistry?

We see a strong trend towards open architectures systems. Laboratories and dentists are sick and tired of proprietary closed systems that leave them with fewer—or more expensive—options to work in the open marketplace.

2. What has been the most exciting development in recent years, from your perspective?

On the scanning side, the number and declining price of intraoral and impression scanners are impressive. On output side, it’s the speed and low price of milling "hard" materials, as well as the rise of 3D printers for niche applications such as models and surgical guides.

3. What does tomorrow’s dental technician look like in terms of their skills and knowledge?

Right now, we observe a serious industry shortage of dental technicians with knowledge of computers and networking.

4. How important is it for digital tools to continue to facilitate collaboration among the entire dental team?

We define the dental team as the clinician, clinical support, laboratory technician, and laboratory support structure. We believe that an open, flexible, fast, and efficient collaboration tool is an essential missing component for the industry. This is the essence of our dentalshare™ network built into exocad systems.

5. What is the most important piece of advice you would offer to laboratory owners who want to remain viable for the next 5, 10, or 20 years?

Over-communicate with your customers, and do everything you can to help them grow. Don't be complacent just because "that's how we've always done it." Often, being a partner with your customers is how you will get the best return on your investment.
