i-CAT™ FLX V-Series

Itzhak Eisinger, DDS

In an era when technologies bring a variety of benefits to the dental office, a particular imaging modality, 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), has had positive effects in my practice. The anatomical details that scans can provide for procedures, such as dental implants, bone grafting, sinus grafts, extractions, and molar root canals, can help prevent mistakes. The volumetric nature of the 3D scan allows me to see the location, condition of nerves and sinuses, and bone density, and I can even rotate the scan 360˚ to see the teeth from many sides and all angles.

Having a CBCT in-house provides benefits to the patient as well. In the past, sending my patients to an imaging center was inconvenient, took time and money for travel, and necessitated additional appointments. While we are waiting for a scan, infection can spread and emergency treatment can be delayed. In addition, sometimes I received inconsistent results with unclear images and too much scatter.

When researching and purchasing my own scanner, I chose the i-CAT™ FLX V-Series, specifically the V8. It gives me a view of the area in need of treatment—two full arches and the sinuses—to determine effective treatment options. This model also allows me to take low-dose scans and traditional panoramic x-rays. All images are excellent and consistent. For implants, built-in navigation of the implant models on the scans allows for precise implant placement with the use of surgical guides. This unit has an open software platform, so I can export files into my implant planning software and move to Tx STUDIO™ software in time. I show these informative images to the patient on my 55-inch monitors, which has increased case understanding and acceptance.

One of the unique features about this system is that it’s upgradeable to larger fields of view. When I expand treatment options, I won’t have to buy a whole new unit. The unit was priced at under $90,000, which is reasonable for a unit this advantageous from a well-respected company, and made in the United States in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

The i-CAT FLX V-Series also comfortably accommodates patients of all shapes and sizes, even wheelchair-bound patients. Its Ergonomic Stability System minimizes patient movement, reducing the need for retakes. Customized scanning options offer greater control of the field-of-view, dose, and resolution, and the touchscreen workflow allows users to choose from preset scan protocols or even customize presets for simple and fast scanning.

3D imaging plays an essential role in many procedures that often would need specialty treatment outside my office. Patients appreciate professionalism, attention to detail, and diagnostic confidence, and that distinguishes a practice from the competition.
