An Interview with Zimmer Biomet Dental

David Josza, General Manager

David Josza has worked in the maxillofacial and dental fields in various senior management roles for more than 20 years, including serving as vice president of the Americas for Biomet 3i and president of Biomet Microfixation. He has also held senior leadership positions at Henry Schein and Leibinger. David earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and holds an MBA in international finance from the University of Houston.

Inside Dentistry (ID): The merger of Zimmer and Biomet 3i last year was huge news. What does it mean for the healthcare industry as a whole, and dentistry in particular?

David Josza (DJ): When Zimmer Dental and Biomet 3i joined forces to become the Zimmer Biomet dental division, 62 years of combined experience in the dental implant industry came together. As an affiliate of one of the largest musculoskeletal companies in the world, we have access to the latest technology, talent, and resources to drive growth and accelerate the development of innovative solutions to address clinical needs. By combining forces, we are more equipped to serve dental professionals and patients worldwide.

Robust portfolios of surgical, restorative, regenerative, and digital dentistry solutions put us in an even greater position to meet the growing demands of the industry. With the power of a collective research and development team, we have already launched two new products since becoming the Zimmer Biomet dental division: the 3.1 mmD Eztetic™ Implant System for narrow, anterior sites and the 3i T3® Short Implants for patients with limited bone height. Collectively, we have approximately 319 combined issued patents and 161 pending patents worldwide.

ID: The tagline of the combined company is “Your progress. Our promise.” What does that mean to you?

DJ: We are pushing the boundaries of progress to help clinicians achieve exceptional outcomes for their patients and their practice. It’s our promise to look beyond what’s possible now and discover what is possible next.

We pride ourselves on being responsive to the insights and input of healthcare professionals with whom we collaborate to guide our innovations. This enables us to evaluate and address unmet clinical challenges by developing solutions that result in better patient outcomes.

ID: What support does Zimmer Biomet offer for clinicians who place implants?

DJ: In addition to providing access to the right products, our Zimmer Biomet Institute offers industry-leading educational opportunities that help clinicians achieve unprecedented levels of professional satisfaction and success, regardless of whether the clinician is new to dental implantology or is a seasoned practitioner. Zimmer Biomet Institutes around the world host courses that range from basic restorative programs for clinicians who restore less than five implant cases each year to advanced cadaveric workshops designed for clinicians who actively place and restore implants. Depending on the course level, clinicians learn everything from basic dental implant restoration to advanced surgical procedures, such as sinus lifts, ridge augmentation, and the use of regenerative materials.

ID: Is there anything in the pipeline you can share with us?

DJ: In February, we celebrated the grand reopening of the Zimmer Biomet Institute training center in Parsippany, New Jersey. The newly enhanced 20,000-square-foot dental training center provides continuing education programs that combine cadaveric and simulated patient training with didactic clinical presentations—all in one state-of-the-art training center.

Construction is in progress for two new facilities—one in Carlsbad, California, on target to open in quarter three of 2016; and another in Shanghai, China, that is scheduled to open its doors by the end of this year. Plans are also being discussed for opening a new Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in 2017.

Headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, we have close to 2,000 employees worldwide with four manufacturing facilities.
