Lower Radiation Even More with DEXshield™

All-in-one positioning ring has radiation-reducing capabilities

Cynthia Brattesani, DDS

I became a digital radiography believer when I switched from film to digital 11 years ago. Since I try to be environmentally friendly, having a DEXIS digital x-ray system made so much sense to me. It freed our office of the hazardous film-developing chemicals and, one of the most valuable aspects of my new system, it lowered radiation exposure to my patients.

As more information becomes readily available through the media and the Internet, my patients have become more educated about radiation and, therefore, more concerned. It is not unusual for them to ask if they need x-rays, and to inquire about the amount of exposure. We have been proud to say that we have digital radiography and do everything that we can to limit radiation exposure. By using our DEXIS® Platinum sensors, we greatly lowered radiation exposure to the patient, and now we have gone one step further by adding DEXshield™.

DEXshield is a patented protective shield that protects the patient from unnecessary radiation exposure. We are excited to share with our patients that DEXshield has been shown to reduce the dose by at least another 30%.* Besides lowering radiation, DEXshield is efficient, as it can capture both periapical and bitewing radiographs.

The ring is a small piece of equipment but brings with it a powerful message. Each and every patient is told that we chose to add this for his or her safety. From this, they see that we care. Patients compare a dental practice with their last experience. They are impressed that I invested in this technology.

In our office, we cultivate a culture of communication in an easily understandable way. Patients really appreciate that. Educated patients help promote better dental health and spread the word about our practice. We are thrilled to add DEXshield. When patients ask if we strive to lower radiation exposure, now we can answer that question with even greater confidence.

Key Takeaways

-- In a laboratory setting, DEXshield plus the DEXIS Platinum sensor was determined to reduce absorbed dose by at least 30% as compared to the Universal Ring with this sensor.*

-- Aligns the x-ray beam with the examination site and provides an attenuating barrier to protect the patient from unnecessary radiation exposure.

-- A true all-in-one positioning ring that allows capture of both periapical and bitewing radiographs.

-- Helps optimize clinical workflow by reducing the number of accessories needed.
