Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15%

The newest addition to the product line simplifies the tooth-whitening process by using pre-filled, disposable trays with no impressions, molding, or laboratory time.

With the wide proliferation of whitening products on the market, comparing specifications becomes cumbersome. The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products has taken its own strides toward recognizing this by approving for "review and comment" a proposed American National Standard for Tooth Bleaching products. This movement will prove to be beneficial for manufacturers in the dental industry that have long touted the preference for dentist-dispensed tooth whitening. Even under the supervision of the dental professional, consumers can still select from a variety of tooth-whitening products, each with a unique procedures, budget, and timeline for treatment.

In the early 1990s, when tooth whitening first gained popularity, Ultradent introduced Opalescence, which became the first ADA-accepted syringe-applied tooth-whitening system. Unlike other formulations at the time, which required an extensive time commitment, the procedure could be completed in an unprecedented 10 days or less. After this introduction, Ultradent became known as the "tooth whitening company" because of its extensive line of quality tooth whiteners including whitening gels in a wide range of carbamide and hydrogen peroxide concentrations.

Newest to the Opalescence product line is Opalescence Treswhite Supreme. Its technology greatly simplifies the tooth-whitening process by using pre-filled, disposable trays ready to use without the need for impressions, molding, or laboratory time. The thin membrane trays adapt to each individual, adhering directly to and whitening all teeth-both front and back. Trays are worn for just 15 to 60 minutes per day (depending on the formulation), and the prescription-strength formula means effective results, faster. (To give consumers more options, trays are now perforated, allowing for upper and lower teeth to be whitened at different times).

Opalescence is available in a wide variety of concentrations and flavors to match a patient's lifestyle. The latest innovation from Opalescence to its powerful tooth-whitening systems is Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15%; a pre-filled disposable tray with a 15% hydrogen peroxide formula and a 15-minute wear time. With no impressions, models, or laboratory time required, Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15% is the perfect option for the patient with an "on-the-go" lifestyle.

Opalescence Treswhite Supreme is most often recommended for entry-level whitening patients as an alternative to over-the-counter whitening products and contains the same potassium nitrate and fluoride-based formulation found in other Opalescence products. This unique PF formula, patented by Ultradent, decreases sensitivity while strengthening enamel and preventing caries. The desensitizing effect of potassium nitrate is believed to be the result of the sensory nerves being prevented from repolarizing after initial depolarization. Increased levels of potassium nitrate may maintain the depolarized state of the sensory nerves, decreasing the perception of pain. Also, according to the Journal of Endodontics, potassium nitrate and fluoride in this combination appear to occlude dentinal tubules.1

Opalescence Treswhite Supreme's 15% hydrogen peroxide formulation provides fast results in an application that is easy to use. The tray material is thin, yet form-fitting, to encourage patient compliance while staying in place (unlike its strip form or paint-on counterparts). The trays are redesigned so that the external tray quickly positions the soft internal bleaching tray; the internal tray material comfortably adapts to fit individual smiles. The patient simply wears Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15% for 15 minutes per day, and results start to show in as little as 5 to 10 days. This product minimizes mess as well, providing an optimum gel quantity that allows for rapid, easy clean-up after bleaching.

Packaging has become an important issue because of its ability to affect product quality. The new high-tech packaging of Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15% is designed to improve stability and shelf life by preventing oxygen exposure. Refrigeration ensures a 12-month shelf life; without refrigeration, shelf life is reduced to 6 months. The Opalescence Treswhite Supreme 15% teeth whitening kit contains 10 upper (maxillary) and 10 lower (mandibular) pre-molded and pre-filled mouth trays, and is available in a cool mint flavor.

Consumers have taken an increased level of interest in tooth-whitening products over the last several years. Because of this, Opalescence Treswhite Supreme has been featured in health, fitness, and beauty magazines including Fitness, Real Simple, Shape, and Men's Fitness.
