New Protemp™ Crown Temporization Material: Ultimate Simplicity in Temporization

Protemp™ Crown Temporization Material, by 3M ESPE (St. Paul, MN), is the world’s first adult single-unit, self-supporting, malleable, light-curable composite crown. This product offers a time-saving technique that can result in higher productivity and patient satisfaction.

AS SIMPLE AS 1-2-3*

Protemp Crown comes in one universal shade and a variety of preformed sizes (Figure 1). To fabricate, select the appropriate size and adapt the crown to its oral environment. Then light-cure, polish, and cement using standard temporary cements, such as RelyX™ Temp NE Temporary Cement from 3M ESPE.

FAST, STRONG, AND ESTHETIC

With Protemp Crown, you can fabricate a single-unit temporary crown in 4 minutes or less, which is up to twice as fast as bis-Acrylic automix and powder liquid systems. In addition, tests show that it has high compressive, tensile, and flexural strength. With its tooth-colored shade and preformed anatomical shape, Protemp Crown provides natural-looking esthetics. The crown can be customized and/or repaired using a conventional flowable such as 3M ESPE Filtek™ Supreme Plus Flowable Restorative or composite materials, and can be polished to a shiny tooth-like appearance.

Because of initial malleability of the crown, just a few sizes and shapes are needed to fit nearly all permanent molar, bicuspid, and cuspid teeth. For routine cases, no lining is necessary.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Protemp Crown is a light-cured methacrylate composite crown that is designed for the temporary restoration of teeth prepared for full crowns. Protemp Crown has a very low oxygen-inhibited layer, which offers minimal resin stickiness on the temporary crown surface, making handling and shaping much easier. In addition, the low oxygen inhibition allows for simple and fast finishing and polishing. Because Protemp Crown is not a powder liquid mix, there is no unpleasant smell when working with the product. Additionally, it is light-cured on demand, resulting in low polymerization temperatures during the fitting process.

The light-curable resin of Protemp Crown is composed of bis-GMA, dimethacrylate polymer, and rheology modifiers. Silanated zirconia-silica and fumed silica fillers are used to impart physical strength, radiopacity, and wear resistance. The silanated inorganic filler loading is approximately 78% by weight; the average particle size of the filler is approximately 0.6 µm. Protemp Crown also contains pigments.

SO SIMPLE, IT CAN BE A 4-MINUTE PROCEDURE
Size Selection
Determine the mesial-distal width and temporary crown height using the crown size tool; select the appropriate size crown using the size selection chart.

    Protemp Crown Preparation
  • Remove the crown from the sealed crown case.
  • Hold the film between your thumb and finger and carefully remove it from Protemp Crown.
  • Measure the height of the adjacent teeth as a guide to the amount of excess to be trimmed off the Protemp Crown.
  • Follow the gingival contour when trimming excess material from Protemp Crown (Figure 2).
    Adaptation
  • Place Protemp Crown onto the prepared tooth.
  • Adapt, shape, and establish interproximal contacts for a snug fit onto the moist preparation (Figure 3).
  • Gently close the patient’s mouth to adapt the buccal surface and establish occlusion. Adapt buccal margin and adjust occlusion (Figure 4 and Figure 5).
  • Tack-cure the buccal surface for 2 to 3 seconds.
  • Open the patient’s mouth for adaptation of the lingual surface; apply finger pressure to the buccal surface to prevent dislodging of the temporary crown and adapt the lingual margin (Figure 6).
  • Tack-cure the lingual and occlusal surfaces for 2 to 3 seconds each (Figure 7).
    Final Cure
  • Gently remove Protemp Crown from the preparation.
  • Light-cure outside of the mouth for 60 seconds (fully cure by exposing all surfaces to the light) (Figure 8).
  • Trial-fit the cured crown and adjust the occlusion, and trim the margin and contour if necessary.
    Finish and Polish
  • Finish using a fine carbide bur and/or the 3M ESPE Sof-Lex™ Finishing and Polishing System (Figure 9).
  • Polish Protemp Crown using a dry muslin rag wheel or polishing brush.
    Temporary Cementation
  • Isolate the teeth.
  • Prepare the temporary cement and apply to the internal surface of the Protemp Crown.
  • Slowly seat the crown.
  • Gently close into occlusion.
  • Remove excess cement.
  • Floss interproximal areas (Figure 10).
  • Check the sulcus.

THE FOREFRONT OF DENTAL TECHNOLOGY

Protemp Crown brings simplicity to the temporization process. No impression or matrix is needed, and no mess is left behind. Clinicians report that Protemp Crown makes it easy to obtain good occlusion and interproximal contacts. Using Protemp Crown for single-unit temporary restorations can help to reduce chairtime by 50%, and increase overall office productivity.
