DEXIS CariVu™

Discover carious lesions in a new way

The latest in digital imaging technology is available in the DEXIS CariVu™ caries detection device. Using transillumination technology, this compact, portable, ionizing radiation–free unit allows clinicians to identify both occlusal and interproximal carious lesions, including those that are recurrent. CariVu can also be used to identify cracks. This unique technology has been proven to be highly accurate in detecting caries.* The device illuminates the tooth with near-infrared light that shines through healthy enamel, making it transparent. As lesions are porous, they absorb light and appear as dark areas.

Compare Images for Efficient Diagnosis

Images captured with the CariVu are similar in appearance to radiographs and are also read like those familiar x-ray images, meaning that lesions will appear as dark areas. Compared to fluorescent imaging technologies, this imaging technique is simpler. There is no need to clean the tooth of bacteria, calibrate the device, or become versed in the meaning of multiple color codes or numeric indicators. Utilizing the DEXIS software, CariVu images are displayed on the screen alongside any intraoral x-rays and photos of the same tooth, enabling clinicians to compare them quickly and easily chairside.

Move Freely with a Lightweight, Portable Unit

CariVu is lightweight, simple to use, and can be operated with one hand. It can be easily carried from operatory to operatory. The tips are simple to attach and remove and are autoclavable up to 250 times. The handpiece offers quick decontamination with the appropriate wipes.

Compile a Comprehensive Patient Record

CariVu creates a comprehensive patient record that enables clinicians to fully evaluate a tooth’s condition, make a diagnosis, and determine preventive or treatment options. When combined with radiographs and intraoral photos, CariVu images can become part of a comprehensive record for evaluating caries over time. Given the technology’s high rate of accuracy, CariVu also offers an acceptable, more comfortable alternative diagnostic method for use in patients who either refuse traditional radiographs or cannot tolerate intraoral imaging using rigid sensors or films; its tips are soft and flexible for easy and comfortable positioning.

Easily Add to Your Hygiene and Restorative Workflow

CariVu can be incorporated into routine hygiene visits to identify carious lesions in their beginning stages and to track their progress. The device can also be useful during restorative procedures before final restorations are placed.

More Clinical Information

CariVu can provide a valuable second opinion when a suspicious area is identified on a radiograph. This is especially important with interproximal decay, which can be more difficult to detect than that occurring on occlusal surfaces. Its transilluminated image reveals the extent of the condition and helps the clinician determine whether it needs monitoring over time or requires immediate treatment. When used together, a radiograph, a transilluminated image, and an intraoral photo provide a comprehensive picture of the health of a patient’s tooth.
