TPH Spectra® Universal Composite Restorative: Preferred Handling, Simplified Shading

For more than 20 years, Lori Trost, DMD, has been focused on providing quality comprehensive restorative and preventive care at her Columbia, Illinois practice. When it came time to select her now go-to composite, TPH Spectra® Universal Composite Restorative by Dentsply Sirona was the clear choice. Every dentist uses composites differently and should not have to settle for a material that makes them conform to an unfamiliar style, she says. “I have been using this product for about 4 years now and gravitated toward it initially because it’s truly a universal composite, meaning I can apply it effectively in both the anterior and posterior regions.”

TPH Spectra is a blend of resin and fillers designed to deliver lower opacity and higher translucency for lifelike restorations that defy detection. It is the only composite with preferred handling and is available in both high-viscosity and low-viscosity formulas.

Trost adds, “Depending on what type of handling you like when placing a composite, you now have a product that can truly customize to each dentist’s handling preferences. For example, if you’re used to packing something posteriorly such as Class I or II, you have a product that offers a high-viscosity feel. Perhaps for an anterior application like a Class IV, you may want the ability to sculpt the composite as you place it, so the low-viscosity formulation would be your choice.”

Along with being extremely easy to handle, TPH Spectra has helped streamline the shading process by providing seven of the most essential tooth shades (B1, A1, A2, A3, A3.5, A4, and C2) that cover the entire VITA® range, providing dentists with greater time efficiency for crafting their restorations. The chameleon shading ability of the composite will blend in to the surrounding tooth structure. “As an esthetic dentist, I truly appreciate this feature in regard to delivering a beautiful restoration that blends with natural tooth structure. Of course, this leads to patient satisfaction and also, dental assistants appreciate a more streamlined composite inventory to manage,” Trost says. Also, TPH Spectra is radiopaque, so it is easily distinguishable on radiographs.

Also, dentists need to feel confident that their polished restorations will be stain resistant. This product delivers on that promise. Trost stresses, “A surface has to be obviously very stain resistant to clinically last a long time in the mouth. So for me, a win-win is having a patient return to the office and present with a stain-free luster months later at their recall visits.” With this composite, the esthetics and service life of restorations last because of its exclusive composite chemistry that’s proven to resist the most common causes of staining.

“Initially, when universals were first marketed, dentists had a little bit of leeriness in how these products would perform—we questioned whether a composite that is strong in a posterior aspect can be a functional esthetic composite in the anterior. TPH Spectra helps to put those concerns at ease. The bottom line is that three factors matter most to any practitioner in regards to a restoration—the ease of placement, how long it will last, and a satisfied patient. This composite is a home run across the board,” Trost says.

Whether you like to pack and sculpt, TPH Spectra Universal is the composite for your restorative needs as it caters to all procedural styles and does so with a proven stain-resistant esthetic surface. Trost emphasizes, “If something can be universal, it truly has the greatest appeal. This composite is simple to use, efficient, long lasting, and can streamline your inventory; what more can you ask for?”
