Compendium
March 2010
Volume 31, Issue 2

From the Co-Editor

Louis F. Rose, DDS, MD

Dear Readers,
In perusing this issue of Compendium, we are confronted by the many roles played by the modern dentist in order to provide comprehensive patient care. From evaluating innovations in equipment and materials to reviewing the latest research on oral biofilms, we continually shift our perspective from clinical practice to scientific theory…and back again. To stay current in our field, we need to identify and integrate essential information swiftly from a wide variety of sources. Here at Compendium, you can be confident in our mission to provide the most timely and authoritative information available.

Our first continuing education article, “Supragingival and Subgingival Plaque: Paradigm of Biofilms,” focuses on research into oral biofilms. The author begins with an overview of microbial ecology and biofilms, then explains the various methods used to investigate these systems and results of some specific studies. In conclusion, the practical consideration of how this research will advance our understanding of periodontal disease and caries is discussed.

“Treatment Planning Implant Dentistry with a 2-mm Twist Drill” describes the application of this method in determining osseous density in an intended implant site, which enables the clinician to alter the drilling sequence and treatment plan in response. The article outlines the treatment decisions and techniques required for different bone densities to enhance primary stability.

At Compendium, we continually apply our wide-ranging resources to support you in your educational efforts.
