During the Middle Ages and through the 19th century, dentistry was not a profession into itself, and often dental procedures were performed by barbers or general physicians. Barbers usually limited their practice to extracting teeth, which not only resulted in the alleviation of pain, but often cured a variety of ailments linked with chronic tooth infection.

Many high-strength ceramic systems have recently emerged on the dental market. Of these, Dentsply Ceramco’s (York, PA) Cercon® zirconia has proven its durability and esthetics to the dental community since 1998. The creation of a dental restoration requires two components to be successful: a scientific component and an artistic one. CAD/CAM dentistry and its associated machines, computers, and programs represent the scientific principles of restorative technology.

Glass ionomers are the newest class of agents to be used in the restorative process. Although commonly used as an auxiliary in conjunction with composite resins, they also function successfully as a luting agent. Additionally, this class of restorative materials is used routinely in the treatment of abfracted lesions, particularly in aging patients.

Implant placement immediately after tooth extraction, followed by an immediate provisional restoration of a single dental implant, provides significant benefits compared with traditional delayed protocols. Patients are not burdened with cumbersome removable interim prostheses, osseous anatomy may be preserved, sulcular form is optimized before definitive restoration, soft tissue has matured before implant integration, fewer surgical interventions are required, and treatment time is accelerated. A few authors noted a diminished implant success rate for immediately restored single implants with provisional crowns compared with delayed restoration. However, many researchers reported short-term success rates between 96% and 100%. Factors critical to success of immediate restoration include initial implant stability in good quality bone and patient compliance with instructions to avoid the provisional restoration during mastication.
