In 1210, a Guild of Barbers was established in France.  Barbers eventually evolved into two groups: surgeons who were educated and trained to perform complex surgical operations; and lay barbers, or barber-surgeons, who performed more routine hygienic services including shaving, bleeding, and tooth extraction.

Advanced Esthetics and Interdisciplinary Dentistry is published four times per year as a supplement to Inside Dentistry.

As its name implies, the primary focus of the journal is to discuss the inter-relationships between the various specialties of dentistry—especially as they relate to improving esthetics and function—and why it is so imperative that general practitioners and specialists work together as a cohesive unit for the benefit of the patient.

Each issue includes a peer-reviewed continuing education course (accredited by Tufts University), an in-depth case study, and a short technique overview. The editor-in-chief, Frank M. Spear, DDS, MSD, is the founder and director of the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Seattle, Washington.
